I've noticed "Thats the power of math, people!" as Parrots frequent harping point as well as Burnhams decision to mutiny in Vulcan Hello.

Yes, Tilly can be annoying. She's supposed to be naive, a little socially awkward and not the "I"m already super mature at 18" type Starfleet cadet. She's not a wunderkid like Wesley was. Hammering on what Tilly says or does takes away from what *other characters* do in Discovery. Stamets is a classic example of a scientist who feels very strongly about his work and is uncomfortable with the idea of it being weaponized...sound familiar?

It's amazing how often this discussion has taken place since 1979, and we just keep on getting irate and disgruntled over it.

You'd think over the last 44 years, we'd all have learned that Star Trek is in constant flux (designs, uniforms, music, style, character dynamics, themes...literally everything has been torn down and re-built uncounted times). And certainly, that if "changes in a franchise" are not your thing...Star Trek probably isn't your thing.

It seems to me that the franchise is far more resilient than some of the fans. It can change and move forward, while fans seem to stay stuck.

I've always felt that being a Star Trek fan requires a higher degree of flexibility than most.

The TOS era movies had the Enterprise bridge change between every movie, for example, with the shift from the TFF bridge to the TUC bridge being the most significant, but people got over it.

Demanding that Star Trek go back to only the TNG style and stay there isn't just poor Trek, it's poor creativity

We wouldn't get prequel series if the franchise had to stay rigid. Whatever one thinks of the aesthetic choices made by ENT, DSC Seasons 1 and 2 and SNW being far too rigid in adhering to the style and vision of TOS would have made all three series impossible. And let's be honest here, Trek is more visually and internally consistent than almost any other space franchise and has managed to keep about 98% of the story and aesthetic consistent or at least recognizable for more than 56 years.

This. Whether you're watching in 1966 or 2023, you know what a Vulcan is, you recognize the Enterprise, the terminology is still similar enough that you know what happens when the heroes cross the Neutral Zone. Star Trek is consistently inconsistent, usually in the better ways.

My favorite thing about the criticisms of Tilly is that people simultaneously complain about her being too immature and too mature at the same time. Whenever she gets giddy and energetic or just socially awkward, she's far too immature to be a Starfleet officer and should be sent to therapy and pumped full of Ritalin until she grows up and learns to be normal. But whenever she shows an ounce of competence in the fields she's already established to be fairly experienced in, she's suddenly an unrealistic character because cadets/junior officers are supposed to be literal schoolkids without any experience or knowledge who should be supervised by their teachers/superiors and never allowed to touch anything critical. Often it's the same people complaining about both.

I adore Tilly. She reminds me of me when I was much younger, which is funny because I don't like me.

We like to piss and moan about the photon torpedo tubes accidentally ending up in the wrong locations due to an uninformed f/x team or the Eugenics Wars being only 200 years before DS9 but those mistakes are such a tiny percentage of Trek that it's almost like complaining nonstop that your car's radio won't get your favorite station when the belts always work and you get great gas mileage.

Please note I wasn't condemning the character, every character can be annoying. I was just mentioning Tilly because she's the endless foil that gets hammered on over and over and over again by this poster

I was actually agreeing with you. Sorry if it didn't quite come across.

I thought young people had to be naïve, believe in the purity of Starfleet by saying things like "I'm Starfleet, we don't lie" before being sentenced to death for tripping over the flowers.
Both at the same time, so that no matter what the character does, I can rightfully be annoyed with them. Young people solely exist so that the wise and mature Starfleet officer main characters can school them when they inevitably screw up.
