Paramount apparently still doesn't get it...

Has any Trek really had a “mainstream breakthrough” since TNG?

Not really. Indeed, I’d say TNG wasn’t much of a mainstream hit outside North America. Kelvin films did it to a degree. I think Disco did have a bit of early success outside the US; certainly in Australia it was bigger than I expected it to be.

To put it another way, there’s nothing to suggest that S3 of Picard has attracted substantially more viewers/subscribers than any of the previous seasons of Picard or Disco, such that a spin-off is obvious.

Right, and even then it really didn’t spawn the Star Trek Cinematic Universe that Paramount was hoping for.

It probably could have if they'd put some effort into it (Paramount I mean)... Years between movies... What is it, 7 years since Beyond now and the movie they announced last year has been removed from the slate again. :-(

Regardless, the whole premise of this thread is asinine. It's just more kvetching.

They have everything they need right now to start production on Legacy (sets, costumes, actors, etc) but the next show is going to be the Academy. The decision makes ZERO sense. Start from scratch with an unproven set of characters, vs the proven crew of the Titan? Waste all the goodwill and enthusiasm the fans are showing?

SMH....

How is it that some random fan hasn't yet risen to be one of the top TV producers in the streaming world? Reading stuff on the Internet and talking among ourselves has taught us everything there is to know about the business.

I will ask again: What exactly is Star Trek Legacy? Because I've heard nothing about it from CBS/Paramount.

Here's the thing. I haven't mentioned it over in the PIC Forum, but I don't know what I think about a show that revolves around Shaw. He's too "I'm a normal guy! What the Hell did I get myself into?" It works for the short-term, meaning this one season, but I don't know how it translates over the long-term. That's why I'd look forward to it more because of Seven.

An unconfirmed, hypothetical spin-off of Picard S3, discussed openly by actors and producers of the current season

The only thing I got out of that article is that Matalas has some wishful thinking about making a follow up show to PIC that he would call ‘Star Trek Legacy.’ Not that it’s an actual thing Paramount is planning on producing. It sounds just like that time that Akiva Goldsman mentioned that he would like to do an anthology show and everyone thought it was an actual thing.

I've wanted an academy show since the rumours were flying around about a prequel movie for the 25th anniversary. The idea appeals more to me than a nostalgia series based upon a nostalgia series.

But why not both? Star Trek isn't just one flavour, even if you have your favourite.

Some things about this...

1. I assume Star Trek: Starfleet Academy has probably been in development way before the current season of Picard premiered. So it's not a case of production saying "F--- You, fans" we're doing this instead.

2. For all intents and purposes, Starfleet Academy is a Discovery spinoff. And my guess it's a way to keep the Discovery production crew together and working after the cancelation of that show.

3. If there is going to be a Star Trek: Legacy series based on Picard season 3, you wouldn't announce it now while the series is still ongoing. If you're Paramount/CBS, you'd wait till either the finale or shortly after the finale to have maximum impact.

4. The fact Matalas is hinting at it, and some of the other actors are playing coy with the idea, would strongly suggest that something is in the works for it.

They’ve already infantilised the franchise with the cartoon shows.
I always loathed those "Saturday morning" animated shows, even as a kid. You know, with the limited animation and the obligatory funny animal/robot. I disliked TAS for being largely crap but persevered for the presence of the TOS cast.

To this day I really don't enjoy animation unless it's the big budget Pixar level stuff, and only some of that. I loved Into The Spider Verse in spite of it being animated, not because of it being animated.

How much of my resistance to animated stuff is deeply ingrained prejudice and how much is down to the show being infantile or just plain bad varies.

Lower Decks isn't a kids show, but it is silly, frenetic, garbled, poorly designed and terminally unfunny - imho anyway. Prodigy is certainly aimed at a younger demographic but looks great and I really don't have a problem with it.

So, cartoons aren't automatically infantile, and being aimed at a younger audience isn't always a bad thing. But I guess I'm just not really an animation guy.
