Paramount apparently still doesn't get it...

Some day someone will explain to me when crying and hugging became such evil and laughable things...and this is why I struggle with emotional expression amongst fans is the sardonic inappropriate humor around such simple human expressions.

It's such an archaic and toxic POV. I remember being almost shocked when that was such a huge and consistent complaint about Discovery. Normal, ordinary human reactions to grief and loss were like, the worst thing ever.

And then I realized, nope, it's just that the protagonist is a woman so ANY emotion will be mocked and seen as a indication of why she shouldn't be there.

Unfortunately it shakes something very personal in side me and reminds me of the mocking I received from friends and fellow Trek fans for daring to cry. That thankfully has changed as I have gotten older, and had mentors and friends who are more accepting. But the laughter gets under my skin and I have a tough time with it.

Fans want?
As a fan, I want an animated (cgi) Romulan war series with the original Enterprise Cast ..
It has been said, so where is it? is it done yet??

I really liked that idea actually. Unfortunately you probably won't get Jolene back, but maybe find an actress who sounds a little like Jolene and I would watch it.

I used to hide it more. But damn, I'm an old woman now. All these people yelling about too much crying in their science fiction just come off as terrified of their own vulnerability now.

I think that’s a completely unfair generalization.

Some of us are just dead inside.
Avatar checks out...:shifty:

;)

Occupational hazard is that I try my damndest to be understanding but this is one that hits on the feels in the deep dark of my mind. I am not shy about my emotions. My boss has seen me cry, I've seen my boss cry. I've worked hard to normalize some emotions but it is definitely a work in progress. Discovery actually felt closer to what I wanted in people and it's hard to see it mocked.

Anything repeated enough runs the risk of losing its impact and becoming frustrating or comedic. It's certainly going to become obvious.

I just finished an Enterprise rewatch, and after a certain point I just stopped caring about phaser fights at all. They were going back to that well way too often, and I'd soon seen every variation of people shooting energy beams down those corridor sets. I'm not saying phaser fights are bad, or an unnatural way for adults to express themselves, it had just been overdone. And if I can get tired of shoot outs I can certainly get tired of people being sad.

There is a difference between expressing emotions and the almost Olympic level lachrymosity(?) on display in for example Discovery.
With due respect, I've both styles in real life. So, no I don't see the difference, especially in a franchise known for overacting actors. Nor do I find it funny.
And if I can get tired of shoot outs I can certainly get tired of people being sad.
It's one thing to become tired of it. It's another to laugh at another person's suffering for reasons that I feel should be painfully obvious.

Friend I don’t know who you are accusing of laughing at people.I don’t see that here.
The issue is about the proposed new show.I for one probably will not be watching it because the premise holds no interest for me.Frankly it sounds uninspired and trite.Best of luck to them however.

They have everything they need right now to start production on Legacy (sets, costumes, actors, etc) but the next show is going to be the Academy. The decision makes ZERO sense. Start from scratch with an unproven set of characters, vs the proven crew of the Titan? Waste all the goodwill and enthusiasm the fans are showing?

SMH....

You are NOT wrong. Well said. Johnathan Frakes said recently that they would probably not be going back to the 32nd century. Sadly it looks like he was wrong. I tried to get into Discovery after they went to the future. But they just made things so uninteresting. Season 3 of Picard so far is the most interesting out of all 9 seasons of live Trek we have had so far. It adheres better to pre-discovery production Trek and is just more enjoyable. And it's not just because of the Legacy characters either. Jack Crusher, Sidney Laforge and Captain Shaw are all much more interesting than any of the other new Characters we have seen on the other shows.
Would love to see a Titan show with those three as well as Seven of course. With Legacy characters making guest appearances each season.

I have a feeling we will get it eventually.

The worst mistake P+ and Kurtzman could make is trying to develop every show from the foundation of “what the fans want.”

That always leads to crappy, generic, safe Star Trek, and that’s literally the harbinger of doom, because, as has been so deftly pointed out here, the fans are consistently inconsistent what they like and don’t like. But one thing almost everyone hates is crappy, safe, generic Trek.

Just make a good, unique show and let the chips fall where they may.

They already did that with Discovery and it was just not that well executed. SNW is better yes. But it still has the taint of Discovery on it. The producers wanted to keep it in the prime universe but yet they didn't want to follow what was established. They just kept doing what they wanted in regards to continuity etc. Which is ok ...but than set it in an unrelated universe....

A viewer will only see suffering if they're buying into the fantasy. Repetition can break the illusion, so that they're seeing actors and writing choices instead. These things have to be done in moderation or else they stop working.

I agree with your premise but what bothered me more about Disco was not the emotional "displays" but that the stakes were always so high with each progressive season. There was little time for the viewer to rest. So I see how that could conflate perfectly reasonable emotional responses to trauma or loss with "Jesus, again?"

I've disapproved of both crying and hugging ever since I attained Kolinahr and thus disapprove of any form of emotional expression.

But based on the average Trek BBS poster, I don't think that's the reason everyone else around here hates crying and hugging.
