Spoilers Star Trek: Picard General Discussion Thread

My hope for the show is that there is no stupid "this raises the stakes" deaths of the crew. No Worf taking a shot for Riker, or Riker taking a shot for Troi or something. This season has been VERY smart and avoided crap like that (Ro Laren's death to tie up the character was perfectly acceptable), but I'm bracing myself for it to happen even though with Data back-ish, the family is finally restored (20 years later). Too many writers across too many mediums get off on snapping the things we care about in half in our faces because drama not-involving-taking-people-away is too hard for many of them nowadays. So they go for the one string everyone easily related to, which is the loss of loved ones.

It's fundamentally cheap and lazy. Death of principal characters isn't real because they aren't real. It just means the end of possibility of their development (barring a resurrection) and using them as a prop to advance other characters plots.

But if any writing staff can avoid that cul-du-sac, this one can. They're 6 for 6 on great Trek episodes. Hopefully Matlas is acutely aware how stupid nonsense like that is, i.e. with Trip's death at the end of Enterprise or most of all, the many deaths of Data, which beautifully undid.

Spock's death is still moving.

It is.

Data's death in Nemesis was really meh at the time, but it has more weight based on how Picard never got over his death as we saw in Season 1.

"Data"'s ressurection in Bounty and the reactions from Picard, Riker, Geordi and such had a really similar weight to Spocks rebirth at the end of TSFS

I hope they don't kill off Worf...of all the returning TNG cast, he's the one most begging for a spin-off.

If someone dies I'll be shocked.

of the TNG legacy characters yeah, I would be too. Same with Jack and the LaForge sisters. But I think Raffi and Shaw could both end up being casualties.

Seven is safe too unless all this “Star Trek Legacy” stuff is just a massive mis-direct.

I seem to remember an old Star Trek novel where Scotty in the 24th century steals a Starfleet museum ship and the Romulan cloaking device from "The Enterprise Incident" TOS episode. I wonder if this was an inspiration or mere coincidence...

I just don't seeing Terry having the nacelles to kill of heroes this season.

I could, especially if it’s a heroic death. Like Shaw pushes Picard out of the way and takes the disruptor blast meant for him.

not that I’m advocating for either to die. I want Shaw in a potential Titan series and Raffi with Worf in a “Star Trek: Lethal Weapon” type show.

I’m starting to think…

… that Shaw will survive the season. And the reveal in the latest episode that has Picard’s body being the weapon that the Changelings wanted has a lot to do with Locutus. That’s been pretty highly theorized. However, Shaw will be instrumental in bringing the Borg down and that will help his Wolf 359 PTSD.

I think the fact that Terry is talking openly about Legacy, instead of keeping quiet, means it's more likely or not that series will be happening. If he had doubts, he wouldn't blurt something like that out on Twitter because that would be using social media to blackmail Paramount. That wouldn't be a good luck from their POV. So yeah...

I think Shaw and Seven both survive. The only wildcard is Jack, IMO.

I think it could go either way.

On the one hand, Shaw surviving to finally get his ship back/kick Picard the hell off the Titan would be a good catharsis for those fond of the character. On the other, Matalas came in saying he expected the character would be a "fan favorite" by the end of the season. Which means he'd be a perfect way to emotionally destroy said fans without sacrificing any of the TNG crew.

Riker seems like a likely casualty. The struggle to get over his sons death, the distance with Deana and his daughter, seems like he could possibly ride off into the sunset.
