    5. if every season represents a full year, then that means it ends in 2263 or 2264. Enough time for Pike to had the keys over to Kirk, while the Enterprise gets a year long refit to look like how it looked in TOS.

Face it, the only show that has a chance of going 5+ seasons now is Lower Decks, and that because its considerably cheaper compared to the rest of Trek shows. But even that show I can’t see going past 10 seasons, maybe 12. Or at least, it shouldn’t.

    Nah, that the penultimate episode.

The finale is the SNW crew coming back together to take Pike to live with Vina on Talos sometime between TOS and TMP

Pike and the audience know that Spock, Singh, Ortegas, and O'Reilly should continue to live at least until the day of the accident (and beyond the point that would be the natural end of the show). If anything, Pike should be aware now that provided he makes logical decisions about where he sends his crew, every one of his main team will all be fine.

But Una presumably spends the 7 years in prison. Ep.10 ends with Pike apparently setting out to alter history again by indicating to Batel he'll fight to save Una. Even though the lesson of the episode was that there can be serious consequences to trying to alter history. It's as if the show is acknowledging that it can't function unless it breaks it's own rules.

Plus, Pike hasn't got a terminal illness. He's a very fit and healthy young man and will continue to be so until the accident. He won't experience the physical decline that accompanies terminal illness. He just has to mark the date he's going to die in a calendar like it's a dentist appointment and then make sure he shows up on time. It's not a relatable situation.

I get that good writers can make a character whose free will has been severely restricted compelling but I just don't see how they do that here.

No, it's not. That's a ridiculous misreading of the narrative.

    There are no "rules" here.

Pike is simply learning to accept that every action has consequences and that he cannot, as a human being, foresee all the consequences of differing choices.

There's a cost to every decision that he makes, and different opportunities open up as well.

So, he saves himself and the cadets. Other things happen afterward that might not have happened if he hadn't. One that he experiences is that one of his crewmen is critically injured and a war possibly occurs that might not have if he had not been the commander on the scene.

He has entirely free choices to make at every point, it's just being driven home to him in a way that it isn't often to most people how chains of consequence branch out from them.

They could have deleted Kirk from this story altogether and told another one, in which the cadet whom he saves and whose father commands that listening station is there with his father and dies as result of Pike's decisions. That would have been somewhat more of a ham-handed "you can't change fate" story.

And, you know what's the delightful thing here, in storytelling terms, is that Pike doesn't know "how it ends" for him. He's been to the future and experienced a loss that everything he "knows" about life tells him must be the end of his story - and it's not.

We know that Spock takes him to Talos.

And what's even cooler is - we don't know what happens to Pike after that. We're just assuming that we do. :) ;)

I don't know about you but I don't exactly go out seeking death.

Then again, I don't go out seeking dentists appointments either.

Hope it goes 5 years, but thats up to Money, and honestly Anson. He has a family, and to my knowledge they don't live with him in Toronto when he's there, so there is that, he may want time to raise his family. Why Richard Dean Anderson took off from Stargate.

4-5 years. 3 is what most successful streaming shows get.

I think you've underplayed the significance of what Pike was taught by his future self. Future Pike told him that if he attempts to escape his fate then Spock will be punished. It's wrong to say that Pike has completely free choices to make - because he will never act in a manner that will result in Spock being injured.

It seemed odd to me that they would make an episode about Pike being warned about altering history only for him to end it...by declaring that he will attempt to alter history by fighting for Una's release. I take your point, though, and Pike will know that if he's successful in getting Una released (he knows Una is still in prison in 7 years, so he has to adopt a different strategy from the one he actually thinks is correct. Because the one he thinks is correct will be unsuccesful) it probably won't result in a galactic war. The stakes are lower, he can risk altering this part of the future.

I think you make a great point about what happens to Pike after he arrives at Talos. But this is interesting in large part because it's an unknown. We're still a long way away from getting to that point, though.

My thinking was that Pike's arc was that he struggled with his vision of his future in Ep.1 but then came to appreciate in Ep.10 that it was inescapable. Where does he go from here? It seems like his story has already reached a logical end point but I'm looking forward to season 2 and to see what they do with Pike.

With how popular the show is contrasted with how streaming shows decrease in popularity and increase in cost over time, I think five is a pretty safe guess.

I'll go with five since it's about to be the lone live action Trek series.

I say a solid 5. But hope for a 7 to see a handoff to the TOS crew.

Five is presently the clear majority guess, with thrice as many votes as second-place (three). Interestin'.

I was concerned as well, but news from Akiva that season 3 of Strange New Worlds is filming reassures me.

I suspect we will learn more about Star Trek's future on First Contact Day.

Una spent the next seven years in prison in the timeline in which Pike DID fuck with the timeline.

There's no reason to believe that is her fate, or has to be her fate. Unlike Pike "dying," he doesn't know that.

So... there i s literally no rule breaking here.
