You seem to have forgotten the definition of "cobbled together" ...

It almost always means barely functional with no thought put into it looking pretty.

That phaser is a perfect example.

You want to complain about the look of the show, you need to use a different example.

I have "forgotten" nothing. It still needs IRL to look like it was cobbled together with the intent of making it serve its intended purpose. That thing is simply an inane mashup, with no thought put into it at all. Thankfully we can see b-gger all of it in the episode due to the abysmal lack of lighting coupled with Paramount+'s batsh** mishandling of the video output...

You want another example of AI-esque "design"? Look no further than Riker's bizarro flashback uniform in 3x03. I'll leave you to ponder that ill-fitting -and utterly pointless- affair.

I honestly don't see what you do; to me it looks like melty AI "art" sh*te... but I do totally agree regarding a Frontier Colony show.

It reminds me of making my own lightsaber hilts from spare plumbing supplies, so there is a certain hand crafted style to it that appeals to younger nerd me.

Did they bring it out for nostalgia or could Starfleet decide to go back to the communicator instead of the Combadge? She's undercover and is going around claiming that she is no longer a part of Starfleet.

Having any type of Starfleet Combadge on her person would at best raise suspicion to anyone she's giving that story to; and at worst would totally blow her cover.
