That's pretty cool. He's using the FJ plans so at least he has a direction on how it's going to be arranged. Should be interesting to see how he handles the undercut and some of the thinner structures.
Using FJ’s plans as a baseline is interesting, but we know how those diverged from what we saw on the show.
Seeing some of those shots makes you think about the ship being constructed deck-by-deck and before certain bulkheads were put into place.
That is quite simply amazing! I would love to do something like that, but I think I would either have to be single, or I would quickly become single again! LOL! Amazing.
Since I suspect he's in the UK (Scots accent) - I also doubt she'll fit in the basement. Houses over there don't tend to be huge unless you're very rich...
Watching his previous videos in sequence. Listening to his thoughts about TOS and the TOS E is like hearing echoes of my own thoughts over the years. Wow! His models also contribute to the sense of size a real starship Enterprise would be. It’s quite something when he puts his camera inside the model allowing you to imagine actually being there on those decks. Amazing!
He just started this project and they appear to be his first Youtube videos. Apparently he’s been thinking about this for years. His remark about the Polar Lights’ 1/350 scale model kit not doing the ship justice is…interesting. Maybe it could be bigger, but then where are you going to put it? I get his desire for 1/25 because it allows him to do a certain level of detail. But given the materials he is using I have to wonder how he is going to support it as it gets ever bigger. His comment about being able to look down the turbolift shaft blows my mind. He his right that looking at a 3D model, no matter how good, on a computer display isn’t the same as looking at a physical model. Early on he remarked about the ship’s internal design with its spacious corridors and bright colours contrasted with the much darker and less spacious interiors seen on later Treks. It’s like hearing myself talk. The newer sets look claustrophobic—I can’t imagine anyone wanting to spend years in such an environment. I also get his criticism of Trek ship design as it’s evolved—it’s gotten ever more detailed (“overdone” as he puts it) and ever more Star Wars like. I really get that. Certainly the designs I’ve been seeing from JJtrek, DSC, SNW and now PIC just don’t work for me at all. All the raves over the SNW E, the new Stargazer and Titan and whatever just leave me cold. Hell, all these years I still don’t like the Excelsior from back when TOS and the TOS films were the only game in town. I better not get started on the SNW E—that thing makes me want to hurl.
Sad, but true. Interesting that SNW does make everything more spacious and except for the bridge (oddly) everything is brighter. I don't think it has the verisimilitude that TOS did, but then I haven't ever tried to fit those sets together into any kind of ship either. But I had pretty much this same thought watching Picard the other night: It's huge AND claustrophobic. (But it isn't Star Wars. That's a different critter.) This project is a way of seeing TOS and FJ in a way that no sane person ever has.
I'd say building it first in 3D would probably save him some material costs He'll need to build it in such a way it can be disassembled or pulled apart in sections if he wants to enjoy looking at the middle of the saucer core.
In his videos he mentions that very thing—sections that pull out to allow seeing inside. He seems to have really thought this through.
Maybe cannibalize a wing-box of an airplane in a boneyard? —for the nacelle supports. Maybe blow-molded nacelles with internal guy wires…some air inflation…interior bridge like construction. Lead in the impulse deck. Aft saucer very solid…blow-molded semi-circular forward saucer. This might allow a hole model to not need jigs or to hang from wires. The neck is a concrete filled fulcrum. Saucer interior like bike spokes. The concrete neck is like an upper case “L” on a ball. Neck inserts into engine block within secondary hull where everything ties in. This model could turn with a light touch, if the forward part of the saucer and nacelles weight about the same. This Enterprise need not be that heavy…I could see it as a ground level windvane. The hollow cladding surrounding the supports can have action figures in them.
I don’t think this guy is inclined to go that route. My sense is he wants to build this like an architectural model. It will need to be supported by some framework. His interest is the interior, so it might not even have a skin in the end. It might end up looking more akin to Kimble (allowing for the refit) than FJ.
I’m not so sure. In one video he built a section that had a portion of exterior hull with a window. This was from a lower part of the secondary hull.
