Some things this week were better, others were worse. In a few ways a lot less satisfactory. I have no idea.

I liked it but weakly so.

I'll be honest, the ships and their interactions in this episode felt off. The graphics definitely felt lower quality.

Indeed, I actually noticed that this time. It had a very roughly rendered quality to it. I mean, it doesn't necessarily bother me, because it's not real in the first place, but it was noticeable.

The weird color grade probably didn't help.

There's at least one shot where they forgot to subdivide the Titan's saucer for render, though. Last week's episode also has an instance of obvious procedural noise used as a texture, as well as a mismatched seam on a normal map on the spacedock model.

It's not the sort of stuff that ruins a shot, but it's still at a level I would expect to get called out in dailies and fixed.

I will say the Briar Patch in INS looked better than this region of space and so did the ship effects, and that movie was produced 25 years ago.

Matalas said on Trekmovie that S3 is the 250th anniversary of Enterprise NX-01's launch in April. That means S2 had to have taken place in January 2401, and only 3 months have passed. It's already been discussed endlessly here and on reddit how implausible Seven's a first officer already cracking under Shaw in 3 months, how Picard was a chancellor 3 months ago and suddenly isn't, Raffi's sudden change in job and emotional stability etc. in 3 months, the absurdity of harvesting wine in January, etc. But it comes from Matalas himself, so there it is.

Raffi also said she's been working undercover for months.

Picard is still Chancellor of the Academy. Look at his special chancellor combadge in ep01 an ep02 of season03.

I'll make it brief:
It's pretty bad. Tropey, schlocky SF trash. Consistent characterisation gets thrown out in favour of the plot, and the plot gets thrown out in favour of dumb or shocking action scenes.

But it is also pretty entertaining.
You know what you get. Spaceships. Action. Aliens. Not much for the brain. But it works well with popcorn.

Also, in contrast to previous seasons, it seems like they didn't front-load their best stuff. This might be the closest we ever get to an actual pre-planned, consistent season arc. Hell, it might even have an actual story. We will see.

It hasn’t come up directly, but if it’s the 250th Anniversary of the Federation’s Starfleet, it’s 2411. Social media is saying as much, anyway. If “Jack” is the approximate age of his actor, with no other 24th century sci-fi or con artistry yet to be revealed, he would have been born in the 4 year gap between “Insurrection” (2375) and “Nemesis” (2379) possibly when Picard (72) and Crusher (53) were frisky from the regenerating radiation on Ba’ku.
Except Terry Matalas himself stated that "Starfleet didn't really start until the launch of the Enterprise NX-01, and that's what Frontier Day is celebrating"; and he and other series production staff have said in tweets PICARD S3 takes place in 2401.

So...real actual STAR TREK then, got it. ;)

If it's 2401 and not 2411 then why does Raffi's granddaughter look like a 10-year-old child and not like a 12-24-month-old toddler?

Raffi's daughter-in-law was pregnant in 2399.

2401: How?

That kiddo in Season 3 is clearly not a 10-year old kid. She's five at the oldest, and could easily be three.

Another solid 8 for me. Still lots of set up, but there were some excellent scenes with Picard, Riker and Jack - and that wordless look between Beverly and Picard broke me.

Shaw's response in this episode was great. He's a very believable and credible captain. I don't think he really had any intention of handing over Jack, and was using the time pressure to get Picard to reveal what Shaw suspected.

Really enjoyed the Raffi subplot, despite her loudly telling everyone she works for Starfleet Intelligence. Loved Sneed - I've missed proper Ferengi so much! And of course, Worf's entrance and line stole the show.

Guessing we'll get some proper scenes with Bev and Jean-Luc next week, and then it'll be Geordi in episode 4.

Oh boo fucking hoo. Swearing is a normal part of language.
For me I'm fine with shit, but fuck breaks the fourth wall. And I say "fuck" almost every day.

Unfortunately the English language is very limited in profanity options compared to other ones.

My opinion on the big reveal?

It’s a cover. It’s actually a clone of Jack Crusher, and Picard knows this, and pretends it’s his son because he wants to protect his “old Friend” after not being able to on the Stargazer. He felt he owed it to both Jack and Beverly. And Riker recognizes Jack as Jack, and that’s why he asking Picard about the obvious.

Well that’s my hope anyway. But as long as whatever the truth is is entertaining, I don’t care.

This one wasn't as good as last week's. It suffered from something that the series as a whole from has suffered from, trying to stretch too little story into too big of a place. Fortunately, this is really only a factor in the Raffi storyline. While it's nice that they haven't forgotten Raffi's issues with her family, the scene with her husband just seemed out of the blue. He's living on the same planet that she just happens to be undercover on? Questionable. It felt like padding so they could hold off on the Worf reveal until the very end, which would have only been effective if we didn't all see the Worf reveal coming.

This also felt like a problem to a lesser extent with the reveal of Jack's parentage. We all saw it coming, it wasn't really a shock to anybody, better to get it out of the way rather than wait till the very end of the episode. That said, the reunion between Picard and Beverly, the silent communication between them that said everything, that was amazing. That, and that alone, made holding off the reveal worth it.

Well everyone has the right to an opinion. And if enough people object, that can alter outcomes. Already it seems like the profanity has been significantly dialed back from season 1 levels based on advance reviews. Which is great for in-universe verisimilitude.

Yeah, that's not even what breaking the fourth wall means.
Ok, fine. It practically and effectively breaks the fourth wall, in that it immediately ejects a viewer from the episode and makes them think of real world production.

Yeah, that's where I am so far. It's schlock. The dialogue is bad in spots (particularly when actors of lower caliber have to belt out the lines) and I'm let down by how things keep happening/being said for the needs of the plot, rather than due to logical decisions of the characters, but so far it's telling a cohesive story from start to end.

Honestly, so far it's reminding me most strongly of Season 4 of ENT under Manny Coto. It's telling a coherent middlebrow fanwanky story in a competent fashion. Shooting for B-tier, not S-tier.
