I did not want the “secret son” trope replayed but man I really like Jack Crusher and can’t wait to see more of him.

Last week I was wondering if he knew Picard was his father, and this week’s subtle lines seem to say he does. The “well Admiral it was nice to meet you” on the Eleos when he thought they were going to die, and the “anything to not be having this conversation” with Picard in the brig. There’s an interview posted with Ed Speleers talking about the character which made me really excited to see him develop.

I believe Matalas has confirmed it's the 250th anniversary of the maiden flight of the NX-01, not the Federation.

Memory Alpha jumped the gun and labeled everything 2411. I get why they did so, though I would have held off for more context. It's been confirmed to be what @eschaton says above - so they had to jump back into all those pages and rewrite them to 2401. By then, the 2411 news had spread.

If it's 2401 and not 2411 then why does Raffi's granddaughter look like a 10-year-old child and not like a 12-24-month-old toddler?

Raffi's daughter-in-law was pregnant in 2399.

The same reason most sci-fi babies turn into speech-capable little kids in just a couple of seasons. To further the story needs. I mean, Alexander was a quarter human and not a full Klingon so technically he shouldn't have looked like a human kindergartener just two years after he was conceived but, hey, Star Trek.

Plus this might not be the most heavily populated planet. M'talas Prime might not have teeming cities and spaceports.
I get the impression M'Talas Prime is the smuggling / black market hub for the Federation core systems.

To give a real world analogy, Brazil and Argentina have historically had very protectionist, regulated economies. But on their doorstep is uber-economically libertarian Paraguay. There are these amazing waterfalls on the border of Argentina and Brazil (Foz do Iguaçu). On the Paraguay side is Ciudad del Este, which is the smuggling hub of licit and illicit goods into the much larger countries (if you've seen Michael Mann's Miami Vice film, that was the city). Paraguay isn't that populated, but outside its capital, the other main cities all border Brazilian and Argentine cities.

With fragmented borders, it makes a lot of sense that Earth would have its "Ciudad del Este" somewhat nearby, and already easily visited during the ENT era.

This one was okay. There were some good moments: Picard accepting Jack is his son, the interaction between Riker and Picard is always smooth, seeing Worf show up to rescue Raffi.

The bad stuff outweighed the good stuff for me, though: the laughing, scene chewing villain, the once again excessive blood/gore/shock (beheading seems very popular on this series), the slooooooooooow action sequences where there are too many silent pauses where there shouldn't be any, the heavy emphasis on hard emotion. It kind of felt like a police procedural, of which I am not a fan.

So middling for me.

I'll give this show an 8 I liked them showing Jack Crusher is a wheeler dealer when questioned by the Fenris Rangers and the stuff with Beverley and Picard and Riker is well acted. I liked the story arc with Raffi and Snead to get information and the unexpected twist was
with Worf was awesome and I'm glad he rescued Raffi
I liked the introduction of Vadic she is certainly a different villian than we've seen on Tng. Amanda Plummer was having fun doing this character. And looking for Jack Crusher and why does she want with him.
I'm looking forward to watching the next episode.

I'll be honest, the ships and their interactions in this episode felt off. The graphics definitely felt lower quality.

Indeed, I actually noticed that this time. It had a very roughly rendered quality to it. I mean, it doesn't necessarily bother me, because it's not real in the first place, but it was noticeable.

Shaw's change of heart at the end of the episode bothers me because it was already established that Jack was Beverly's son. But suddenly when he's Picard's son it's more important to keep him safe. Is this show as "empowering" to Beverly's character as the showrunners were hyping? Because it doesn't feel like it so far, and her having an action scene to supposedly show otherwise now feels like a gimmick.

I don't think that's the case at all.

It's finding out why Picard is doing what he's doing, and discovering that he has a son, suddenly.

There could be something in Shaw's background that sympathizes with that aspect.

Ergo the sudden change of heart.

Where was Beverly in the "two weeks ago" flashback?

Season 2 was in 2401 (Picard's wine bottles) and Matalas had previously said season 3 takes place a few years later. Are we now thinking seasons 2 and 3 take place in the same year?

It all ties into Pioneer Day being an observance of the 250th Anniversary of the NX-01's launch and the start of her historic mission which says this is all in 2401. But the way the dating and estimates of when things happened this season is all over the map who knows. Maybe it'll all be clear in the next week.

Still not sure how to rate this. I didn't like it as much as last week - I felt the Raffi portion brought it down a bit and it felt like the plot didn't move forward a whole lot compared to where we left off. It was an enjoyable episode though. I liked the hammy villain so far. I liked the end with Picard taking charge. It was great seeing Worf again but I didn't like his fight scene. I'm learning towards a 7 here.

Matalas said on Trekmovie that S3 is the 250th anniversary of Enterprise NX-01's launch in April. That means S2 had to have taken place in January 2401, and only 3 months have passed. It's already been discussed endlessly here and on reddit how implausible Seven's a first officer already cracking under Shaw in 3 months, how Picard was a chancellor 3 months ago and suddenly isn't, Raffi's sudden change in job and emotional stability etc. in 3 months, the absurdity of harvesting wine in January, etc. But it comes from Matalas himself, so there it is.
