If by "a dick" you mean "doesn't kiss Picard and RIker's boots and doesn't particularly want them stealing his ship", then yeah.

Far as I'm concerned? Shaw's ENTITLED to be a dick.

He knew they were up to ass-hattery, and was insulted that they thought he was so gullible. Honestly, it is understandable.

    Depends.
If it's true that the critters from "Conspiracy" are back, he could be compromised.
(Apparently some have seen the entire season, including one YT channel I wasn't expecting. But, like my ex, he could be faking it too...)

Anything else regarding the D-word is what I will be looking up on a dating site later on.

He’s not. He’s doing his job. Maybe he’s a little too rigid. But we’re 1/10 of the way through the story. I’m betting the character has a story arc.

    Shocking, I know.

Well, Picard and Riker didn't show him any respect, So him being a dick is well, kinda expected from any decently long serving captain.

This. This. A THOUSAND TIMES this.

Why the hell SHOULD Shaw respect Picard and Riker? They just waltz onto his ship like they own the place and expect him to kiss their asses. If I were in his shoes I'd probably be even more rude to them.

Plus, it speaks to the larger issue about following orders. I'm sure Shaw doesn't particularly care for the "I disobey orders, so therefore I'm better than you" attitude that seems to be infesting Starfleet. Shaw not only obeys orders, he's proud of doing so. He knows his place. As I would.

I admit I am curious as to why Shaw - who, if the Constance is any indication, has suffered significant Borg-related trauma - specifically asked for Seven as his XO. I don't think he's deliberately trying to make her fail (as some have suggested), but I am interested.

Oh, and Shaw is entirely within his rights to order Seven to use her human name on his ship. He's the captain. Deal with it. When she came aboard, I find it extremely likely that Shaw was NOT a dick to her about it and that a conversation very much like this one ensued.

    @Qonundrum, regarding your spoiler - I don't think that's the case.

If Shaw had been taken over by a bluegill parasite, someone would have noticed. If Picard and Riker didn't, Seven would have. Shaw didn't show any of the signs of infestation.

He seems to have a problem with Picard's 6-day Borg history but he's comfortable with Seven as his XO. The theory that Shaw has a BOBW connection seems a very reasonable one. Noone else on the bridge appeared to demonstrate any dislike towards him - although admittedly there wasn't much interaction. Ensign La Forge never looked up or appeared upset when Shaw told Seven she had "loyalty'd" her way to the end of her career. It's interesting he didn't send Seven to the brig when he found out about her deception - suggesting it might have been an empty threat and possibly more of an expression of disappointment in her (which I think he was more than entitled to feel). I really like the character - he's very shrewd and forthright. His comments about Picard & Riker's irresponsible adventures seemed like a dig at the TNG movies. I liked him and I'm looking forward to seeing how he responds to what happened.

He has a job to do. It doesn't mean he's not good at it. The Sisko didn't like Picard, either.

Her tone of voice when she corrects Picard implies otherwise.
And no, it isn't his right to force her to use a name she does not consider her own.

But not with her preferred name.

We don't know that he's not comfortable with Seven using her preferred name. We just know he "prefers" she uses Hansen.

Yup. Shaw can bark orders and expect people to follow them all day long, but he doesn't make any effort to command the respect of those around him. If you don't respect the people under and around you, you shouldn't expect any of them to respect you back, regardless of your rank. That makes for a bad captain, regardless of efficiency ratings.

For the record, I'm not a fan of threads that are so lightweight that the title says more than the OP...but I see some discussion potential here, so I'm leaving it open.

Shaw's preference outweighs hers. Simple as that.

Llike I said...he's the captain. That gives HIM the right.

Seven wants to have a "preferred" name that she "identifies" with? Let her get her OWN damn ship. Then she can "identify" however the hell she wants. Until then? She can keep her trap shut.

If Seven continues to have a problem with it, let her transfer off the Titan and be done with it. I'm sure there are dozens, if not hundreds, of other captains who'd love to have her onboard and don't particularly care how she "identifies". Perhaps Shaw is being a tad unreasonable in that regard...but it's his ship, he's entitled.

Biggest asshole in Trek? Too soon to tell when we've got Q, Nechayev, aliens that see the Enterprise as maze for lab rats, a slew of full-on badmirals and mad captains, and every villain out there to compare against. Would I prefer to see him chewing vaccuum right now? Yeah, for sure.

The big issue that's stuck with me about Shaw is that whatever his issues with Picard, Riker, and Seven and what they were doing, he was effectively in hiding the entire episode, on his own ship. He wasn't there when VIPs came aboard; he wasn't there when the ship left spacedock; he only confronted Picard and Riker in private; and he was in his quarters when the ship was hijacked, blissfully unaware until it had arrived at the wrong destination. His showing so far screams "weak leader".
