Spoilers Star Trek: Picard General Discussion Thread

I strongly suspect that context clues will come as the season unfolds. Otherwise, what's the point in having a season? Here's the whole story in cliff notes form so you all can check the boxes!

Terry Matalas is married to someone who appeared (in a very minor way) in Enterprise. I wonder if there was even a remote notion of trying to find a spot for her to cameo in Picard in any way. Although I believe she gave up acting quite a while ago.
Just an idle thought.
Hey, I got my wish! I didn't even notice myself, but just saw someone point out that Terry Matalas' wife, Amy Earhart (star of Pink Five and background Vulcan in ENT) is the voice of the Eleos computer. :)

I don't have an instrument here - is this 'Pop goes the weasel' from Farpoint? :D

I can't read music if it could save my life but somebody online said it looks like "La Marseillaise." Which, hey, another in-universe connection because France and Picard's family.

Nice! I didn't know that. Good for her. Trey must be so proud!

David Blass just confirmed on Twitter that Picard season 3 takes place in 2401.

That might work if S2 is moved back to 2400 (which is actually mentioned in that season), and then they are celebrating the launch of the NX-01 (which wasn’t the literal birth of either Starfleet but whatever, you can take metaphorically).

Then it’s just the videos logs and Drexler’s dates that don’t line up.

Not sure if a spoiler but I will put it here to be safe.

Interview with Patrick which mentions a scene with Frakes where they are both digitally de-aged for what I assume will be a flashback.
RMB talks about flashback scenes and in an interview with Gates Mcfadden and Patrick Steward for Collider, Gates states that there is a "birthing sequence". So I think a couple of the Next Gen crew are going to be de-aged.

I am sorry, but I am still disappointed by the depiction of Starfleet officers in the late 24th and early 25th centuries. Why are Starfleet captains and admirals shown as bigoted, small minded and backward thinking people? In the TOS & TNG eras they were much more forward looking and open minded. If you say the show runners are doing this to mirror our society then I would say that’s not entirely Star Trek. Star Trek usually use alien races to represent our current flawed society and use Starfleet officers as the idealized, evolved society. They are the high ground, so to speak. But not in Picard, I find the current depiction of Starfleet officers in Picard quite revolting.

You might want to go back and check out the rather long list of assorted Star Fleet Officers we've seen over the years that weren't exactly living up to that ideal image you've got in your head.
A good place to start would be with the episode "Balance of Terror" and a certain Lt Stiles.

Stiles was such a bigot he even shot attitude to Spock in the middle of a defense drill - when the ship was about to be attacked. Dude couldn't even dial down his bigotry long enough to take advice on phaser preparations from THE SHIP'S FIRST OFFICER.

Ignoring the fact that we’ve seen bigotry amongst Starfleet officers dating all the way back to TOS, let me list some “recent” 24th century history:

  • Wolf 359, and the death of thousands that resulted from that battle, partly due to Picard’s involvement as an assimilated drone. Even Sisko couldn’t get over this, until the Prophets stepped in.
  • The Maquis - federation civilians having to turn to terrorism after feeling betrayed by the Federation.
  • The Dominion War, and all the death that came with it.
  • The Mars attack - thousands dead AGAIN, and right on Earth’s doorstep.
All of the above happened in less than 20 years. Can you even imagine…? And now, in the early 25th century, Starfleet is largely populated by officers who grew up during that period.

James Kirk, considered the greatest commanding officer of his era, said “let them die” re: the Klingons, admitting he still hadn’t forgiven them for murdering his son many years before.

If Starfleet’s poster boy at that time could let such opinions spill out, why not others who have grown up through far worse?

To be honest, if we were being shown an unaffected Federation society, then that would actually be very unsettling as a statement on how we’ve evolved to that point. Perhaps even terrifying?

As a show, PIC has been doing a good job of calling this behaviour out, though. Picard did it with Clancy and others, in Season 1, and even 3x01 paints Shaw’s attitude in a poor light.

Nothing about 25th century Trek is celebrating this darker period of bigotry and prejudices in Starfleet, but I’m certainly glad it’s not suggesting it doesn’t exist.

Why are Starfleet captains and admirals shown as bigoted, small minded and backward thinking people?
All of them are shown that way? Or is it a select few who have experienced trauma and need to work through it through personal experience? Because this is what Trek has depicted before:

Sorry that was from TNG. Let's move to the more sanctified DS9:
