Sure, but on the other hand the guy shows up unannounced on your ship, is clearly lying to you and trying to manipulate you into violating your orders, and he won't even tell you what he's up to. What the hell?

If that was all that it was, Shaw would probably be an early favorite of mine. I like when the only thing that makes a character an alleged bad guy is that they don't lose IQ points around our heroes. (Yeah, also a fan of Clancy and her f-bomb. :D ) But one of the first things we know about this guy is that he's apparently ordered Seven not to use her preferred identitifiers. He's a deliberately shitty host and disrespectful well before Riker tries to pull the awful "Hey, as a fellow captain, why don't you put your ass on the line just for us? *finger guns*" plan. And then he busts out the explicit bigotry. That's a lot of horseshit for writers to dig a character out of, and they've buried this guy so deep in on first meet that I'm really not interested in watching them try.

A Frontier Day trinket replica of the TOS Enterprise alongside too many TNG Enterprises. Customers clearly don't want "the fat one."

That seemed pretty close to "Buy two Datas action figures and get a free Riker" which actually happened.

Is that a TOS Enterprise or a Dreadnought? Or is that just the holder?

Somebody else just told me it might be a Dreadnought though I felt sure that projection was just the holder. Either way, a TOS aesthetic ship model and if it is based on the Franz Joseph designs I'm still happy!

Maybe you need to adjust your brightness? No problems seeing at all.

I had the brights up all the way. Still felt like I was watching people interact in the dark. If you need to adjust brightness for any movie or TV show that means the lighting sucks.

Q: Captain Liam Shaw the Mutineer. You diverted his ship to Wolf 359 to set an example to those who would break the chain of command. And after all the crew were assimilated...

Q: ..,you set off a delta-ray device which melted what remained of their humanity. Most efficient.

PICARD: I've never even heard of a Captain Liam Shaw!

Q: Oh, but you will. And you have. That's the beauty of it!

On the one hand Shaw was a full out jerk for no good reason other than to make US not like him. OTOH he was almost the first captain in Starfleet to not get his ship ridiculously hijacked. I was almost rooting for you, Shaw. (And he's Jeremy Johnson's DAD on Phineas and Ferb!)

Speaking of Shaw, if you look closely during the end credits you can see a performance evaluation report being filled out with his name on it and him evaluating a Cmdr. with the name blacked out, I'm wondering if that was supposed to be him filing a report on Commander Hansen (Seven of Nine)'s conduct in helping Picard and Riker.

I was thinking the same thing. (Unless Seven leaving her is just part of the cover story, they'd have left the interesting parts in between seasons and all or most of what we got was the bickering in between!) Same as other major developments between s1 and 2, like everyone returning to SF.

And technically, did I miss something or were Picard and Laris not even together at the end of s1? He wouldn't commit and she got out of Dodge.

Oh well, we'll fill in the blanks.

You missed the last scene. He 9bv8oysly asks for another chance and she obviously gives it to him.

This clip of the Titan leaving spacedock was just so good. It harkens back to the shots of the Enterprise leaving spacedock in the TOS movies. Just seeing the ship slowly leave space dock with the soaring score, the professionalism of the crew, the little banter between Picard and Riker, Seven sitting proudly in the captain's chair. Perfection!

Or the critters from "Conspiracy"...? They deserved a follow-up...

Is the ship set darker here than when 1701-D was in "Generations"? Are there any screencaps?

I wonder if this "trust nobody at Starfleet" will have a payoff better than "Conspiracy", not that it would take much - tasty neon-dayglo-80s purple shellfish scuttling around everywhere was a bit cheesy, making up for how awesome the mind-controlled personnel were, which was pretty solidly done overall...

Not to mention the “they always had a different face” line and even the shape of the alien ship…

I believe this choice was made for two reasons:
  1. Matalas has made it clear he wants to have all of the characters start the series in very different places than where we last saw them. Riker is apparently the sole exception - he's basically the same guy - but everyone else is supposed to have been visibly changed by 20 years. So Bev goes from nice lady doctor to Sarah Conner.
  2. A big criticism of TNG that has occurred in retrospect is how it kept to dated tropes where Bev and Deanna were helpless damsels in distress. Like both of the actresses had experience with fencing - and Gates had experience with martial arts - yet they wouldn't let them pick up a sword or do anything more physical than breaking flowerpots over heads.

For the Q/Vash/Robin Hood episode, Gates & Marina were the only two who knew how to fence & the only two who didn't get to fence in the episode, aside from Data.
