At this point William Riker pretty much IS Jonathan Frakes playing himself in a way similar to how later Roger Moore 007 movies were just Roger playing himself.
I wonder if this might be because Chabon created Laris, and otherwise they would have to pay him residuals all season?

I personally thought the Q/Picard stuff last season was like way more Patrick Stewart/John de Lancie's relationship/feelings/friendship than Picard/Q.

I just think its more people aren't used to Riker talking to Picard that way, but this has been how Frakes has played Riker for a long time even going back to the jokes he was making when they rescued Worf in First Contact.
