The Expanse might return - on Apple TV+!

Not gonna get my hopes up just yet, but The Expanse would make a perfect pairing with For All Mankind, and could even serve as a sort of spiritual future for that series given the advances in space travel that have already occurred and the exploration of the Moon, Mars, and eventually beyond on that series.

If they do bring it back (long shot), I hope they incorporate the thirty year time jump and just give the actors that come back a tinge of gray without too much aging makeup that inconveniences the actors and almost always looks terrible, and aren't really necessary given the anti-aging drugs.

Hell, they can even bring back and recast Alex if they want to. Just pull a Litverse Trip Tucker and say his "death" was a fake recording so that he could go on an undercover pilot mission for Mars. But only if they keep Bobbi aboard the ship too. She's better when she's with the Rocci crew rather than separated.

They can cure cancer. That's pretty advanced. :)
They can keep it at bay if caught soon enough. Also regrow limbs and perhaps other body parts other than the brain. That medial tech in the real world might outstrip that shown in The Expanse is quite credible if the super rich are afraid of death, disease and disability. From various descriptions in the books, I got the impression that James S A Corey's (Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck's) knowledge of medical matters is a sketchy as his (their) knowledge of the practicalities of rocket science. I mean it's better than many writers', but I suspect it purposefully falls short for the needs of telling the story.

Oh Definitely. I'd take that any and every day of the week instead of the surgery and chemo
It's still chemo. Jim Holden has a pump implanted that delivers a regular dose. We should be up to or beyond individually tailored, genetically-modified viruses/mRNA by the time shown in the show. We should also have advanced forms of CRISPR-like biotech that are better targeted and that can perform error correction.

From things said by the likes of Ty Frank and Naren Shankar since the end of the deal with Amazon, it's been pretty clear they were already in the process of continuing the franchise elsewhere in some form or another.

I don't remember the exact phrasing (I knew I should've made a note), but in the last month or so, Ty Frank made a comment about the "end" of the show on his "Ty and That Guy" podcast that seemed to me like the crew wasn't even bothering to pretend the show was actually over and this isn't just a blip. I think it was something about the Laconia vignettes in the last season, and the way he said it seemed to indicate it was a foregone conclusion there was going to be more show building on them.

Honestly I'd be surprised if they go straight into the final three novels given the three decade time-jump in the books (though I suppose they could credibly cut that in half for the sake of the adaptation), and would expect to see more of a spin-off project or indeed; projects plural. After all 'The Expanse' originated as an RPG, and that's what all the world building was developed for. As a result it's ongoing narrative need not always be inexorably tied to the adventures of the Roci crew. There's enough of a living world that they can tell almost any kind of story they want, up and down the timeline.

I'm not sure if it was Frank, Abraham, or both, but in interviews, there's always been a disinclination towards spin-offs and other work set in the Expanse universe, like they see the whole thing as a vehicle for this one epic story. Which is odd because, as you say, the whole thing originated as a open-world game concept. Like, I'm almost a little surprised by the existence of the table-top RPG or upcoming video game. Like, the game is a spin-off of the show, so that makes some sense as being out of their control, but the RPG is explicitly based on the books. Given all that, it could be they're exaggerating or lying about how much they don't want spin-offs, to preserve surprises or just to keep people from hassling them when they have nothing to announce.

The Expanse left off in a perfect place to start a new series, with Drummer in charge of the ring, and all those planets to explore. I would love to see it continue, but like you say, I'm not holding my breath.

And yes, For All Mankind is brilliant. Love that show.

It's hard to tell. The art is clearly of the television characters, but the article describes it as being both a sequel to the TV show and an interquel to the novels, as does this official-seeming listing. I suppose it'd be possible to craft a narrative that's consistent with both versions of the story, though tricky.

The only Expanse comics I read were the origin stories of the Roci crew. From what I remember, those seemed to be set in novel continuity but had the characters drawn in the likenesses of the actors from the show.

Following up, this new comic miniseries has a pre-order Kickstarter up where you can order the series as a digital subscription, three collected volumes, twelve individual issues, or a selection of, frankly, incredible (and not in the good way) collectors' editions.

Also, I don't have it at-hand, but I believe I saw an interview clarifying that this is solidly in the show's continuity, and the mentions of the novel series are marketing. I think that's confusing, maybe it has to do with their prior comic tie-ins, and the first one that split the difference between whether they were tied in to the show or the books did better than the second one that was explicitly set between seasons and not books.

Part of the charm of the last three books is that they're all freaking old.

I love the cast, but they should recast old people for the new series. Except Shohreh Aghdashloo. She has to be made up to be ridiculously old and meaner than ever.

Hell, if they could have held off for another season that could have solved their Alex problem. I'm really going to miss not seeing the ending that Alex gets in the books.

A comment on the Kickstarter verifies that it's show-universe.

The first one could be canon-agnostic because it was all backstory, and what comes before show and books is pretty much the same, except that Alex doesn't have a family in the books (and indeed, the Alex issue is the only one that is clearly not set in the books canon).

A canon-agnostic version of this would be pretty hard to write, unless you were very clever with references to why Alex wasn't present.

predordered/backed my digital DRM free PDF copies.
Story aside, hoping for many cool covers which could lead to posters/prints.

Now if they would only let Clinton Shorter release the later season (5+6) soundtracks, as well as a complete Series BluRay set...

and hopefully the recently announced action figures will look decent too

Should I read the books now or wait until after whatever series comes out next?
I guess it depends on whether you mind learning the broad strokes of what is to come. I say broad strokes because due to various factors, the granular details are going to be substantially different. Each season of the show differed a little, and those differences compounded over time.
Probably the biggest one is Drummer; the book version of her started out as just a bit-player, while the show version became a conglomeration of several major characters in successive books. Partly to streamline and to make it easier for the audience to invest in a recurring character than several less recurring ones . . . but mostly I think it was so they could keep working with Cara Gee. As an extension of that; there was a reason I said book Drummer "started out" minor, because once you get to the novels that were written *after* they started making the show, she suddenly becomes a much bigger deal. As if they were realigning the books to be a bit more in line with the show, and maybe make the adaptation process a little smoother.

So I'd say for now; read the books up until the point where the show ended first then see how you feel about continuing. You never know, by the time you get through them all there may be a new adaptation announcement.

Personally, I continued reading the books past where the show left off the first time it was cancelled. I never expected it to be rescued the way it was, and I honestly don't regret reading them first. The books are very different animals than the show, and I like having the added context that inherently comes from experiencing a story well adapted into multiple mediums.
It comes down to personal preference of course and either choice is perfectly valid.

Speaking of the Many Faces of Drummer:

You should read the books just to find out how badly they screwed up Book 3, Abaddon's Gate. In that show Drummer got to be Bull.

I'm sure that was mostly due to the fact that they wanted to get to opening the gates faster AND they were staring down the barrel of cancellation. (Which happened.)

I was happy that they did Amos and Clarissa's story so note perfect in Season 5. Because they really gutted her story in season 3.

I think they dropped some threads in the last episode that indicate that if they get to come back that they will be doing a much shorter time jump. Which is really too bad. OTOH, I'll take it over nothing.
