What do you think became of the Fenris Rangers by the 32nd century?

Sure. But companies -- by which I assume you mean for-profit business firms -- are completely different entities from private militias, which is essentially what the Fenris Rangers are. Companies are organizations that rely upon the stability provided by governments to engage in commerce and which rely upon state institutions (and ultimately state violence) to protect their property interests. Private militias of the sort the Fenris Rangers represent tend to pop up in the absence of state institutions or state stability.

No one's saying it's impossible for the Fenris Rangers to still exist, but it's implausible. The private militias that developed in response to the collapse of the Iraqi government after the U.S. invasion, for instance, were gradually either absorbed by or ended up in conflict with the new Iraqi government. Most of the private militias that evolved during he Libyan civil war were either absorbed or dissolved after the rise of the new Libyan government. That's how it usually goes -- the private militia that emerges in the wake of state collapse normally either gets absorbed by the new regime or ends up dissolved.

There's always going to be a need for mercenaries (IOW, people willing to do dirty deeds for outrageous amounts of money).

The whole point of moving DSC to the 32nd Century was to either not have to continue anything from the rest of Star Trek or have whatever was going on in the rest of Star Trek already resolved. Based on that line of thought, I think the Fenris Rangers are no longer around in the 32nd Century. I don't even think they were still around by the time of The Burn in the 31st Century.

For the rest of this post, for the sake of argument, let's say they lasted for centuries. I think The Burn shook everything up to the point where they would've been fractured. New groups would form to take the Fenris Rangers' place.

The different entities that would take the Fenris Rangers' place would probably be providing justice from the Emerald Chain. The 32nd Century is the most rough-and-tumble the galaxy has been in 1,000 years. Even though the Federation is starting to reconnect, they're nowhere near where they used to be.

Which is not what the Fenris Rangers were. They're not mercenaries out for private wealth, they're a citizen's militia trying to provide stability -- a form of mutual aid rather than a for-profit business firm.

If the Federation takes over the functions that were formerly handled by the Rangers, where do the ex-Rangers go?

What do you do when you've made a career out of killing people?

That sounds like a very reductive description of what the Fenris Rangers do. But we know that at least one former Fenris Ranger joined Starfleet. There are probably plenty who would join space services like Starfleet. Others might go on to run for elected office. Others might return to whatever careers they had before the Rangers -- scientists, artists, engineers, etc. Infinite possibilities.

Hunted down and eaten by the snake-men from the fifth dimension, who infiltrated our Reality in the 28th Century.

Perhaps they finally won the World Series?

Oops, sorry, wrong Rangers. :D

I like to think that they eventually transformed into a legitimate government over that part of space.

Well, I dunno about a government as such (they didn't seem to be made for that sort of thing) but I can totally see the Fenrises hiring themselves out to whatever governments DO form in the area. A disaster relief team, maybe?

"What do you think became of the Fenris Rangers by the 32nd century?"

You can change the question to : What do you think became of the Knight Templars by the 20th Century?
The answer is simple, there is no Fenris Rangers by the 32nd Century. I prefer a more dynamic Star Trek universe than a uniform one that all factions in 24th century still exist even after 32nd century. So why should Fenris Rangers still exist even by the 32nd century? Even if there are similar faction with similar cause, the name can be different.
