Hi all, I deleted my previous posts as I was essentially thinking aloud and boxed myself story wise, so I think it's best I change my approach and come at ST4 from a more analytical and overarching perspective. Just a quick timeline to start:
2233 - George kirk killed, kelvin. James T Kirk is born.
2255 - Kirk meets Captain Pike, applies to starfleet academy. Uhura is present.
2258 - Events of ST 2009
2259 - Events of ST Into Darkness
2260 - Enterprise is repaired and relaunched on a 5 year mission
2263 - Events of ST Beyond, New Enterprise A is built. "continuing mission"
(is the Enterprise A resuming the 5 year mission with 2 years remaining, or is it on a completely new mission briefing?)
The context of the end of Beyond leaves the possibility open for the Enterprise to be doing whatever mission ST Command wants it to do.
The ship in ST4 would likely be the same as what we saw at the end of Beyond, unless the producers saw fit to redesign the pylons and nacelles to push it more to resemble the prime timeline Enterprise A.
ST 4 could be set anytime after Beyond, however with the inevitable aging of the cast I suspect that it will be in between 2265 and 2270. This falls right in line with the 5 year mission of the Prime Timeline Enterprise NCC 1701 as we see in TOS. ST 4 will likely be a self-contained finale to the abramsverse Star Trek continuity.
ST ID and ST Beyond both feature the ship being near or totally destroyed crash landing towards and into a planet. ST 4 will have to do something different to raise the stakes... how about a good ol' threat to planet Earth which would harkon back to Nero and ST 2009. It would also be exciting to see a fleet of Kelvinverse Starfleet ships superior to what we saw in 09 and leaving the nonsensical USS Vengeance as a tragic historical footnote. After all who wants to see a ship design defending earth that previously kamakazied San Francisco? (and assumingly killed multiple thousands of civilians in the process)
There is the fact that Kirk almost took a placement as an admiral at the beginning of Beyond, but by the end of the film his perseverance and victory over Krall has clearly reinvigorated him and he is plenty happy to carry on in the captains chair. Imo Pine is 42 and the hypothetical ST 4 wouldn't be released until at least 2025 if they started filming this year, so that would make him 44 or 45 at least. But I still don't think he is quite old enough that the admiral title works for me, maybe I could see it if he were closing on 50 like shatner was in TMP. Speaking of TMP though, it would be satisfying to see Abrams Kirk as a more mature and cultured individual by the time of ST 4 with a more disciplined energy about him (although this is Kirk we are talking about and every once in a while he will have to be funny or do something stupid for the sake of the audience). Any thoughts on how Captain Kirk could break trust with his crew mates or have them otherwise shaken by his views or actions? His character Arc in ID was from selfish to selfless, and in Beyond his confidence in himself grows as he is put through his paces to save his crew once again. Perhaps it could be a question of family, a conflict of interest between him and Starfleet Command, or the Possibility of War? Speculate people!!
Oh and thoughts on time travel, George Kirk reappearance and character arcs for bridge crew.
I still like the idea of more development and backstory for McCoy and Sulu saving the day to get command of a new Starship and Kirk and him could have a little competetive banter while the two ships venture off into the distance, mirroring ST VI. Thanks everyone BTW, I have lurked on this forum since 2012 and have finally taken the time to make an account and begin my journey! LLAP
