Final Trailer!

The funniest thing about all of this...

2000s and 2010s: "No more prequels! We want to go past Nemesis!"
2020s: "We love the prequel! But that show that went past Nemesis is trash!"

Nick Meyer was right. Fans don't know what they want.
Well, ENT especially for the second half of season 1 and 2/3rd of season 2 was pretty weak. And yeah, while I would see it as walking up to the TOS canon line but not crossing it, others might disagree.

Whereas last night I finally completed Picard season 1. My initial one sentence take is that it could have accomplished 90% of what it was trying to do while also taking out 90% of the stuff that would massively set off a critical mass of the fanbase. When Michael Chabon was quoted as saying he knew he'd push fans' buttons, I'd assumed it would be some progressive activist political thing that was too on the nose, but, no, it was fridging characters left and right!

I appreciated this approach. No character should be safe.

I skipped out on ENT during first-run. I watched it during the Quarantine and this was my takeaway: S1 was kind-of okay (the more they focused on stuff specific to the 22nd Century, the better), S2 was a snore almost until the end, S3 was not my type of thing (I think it's basically Star Trek for Republicans), and S4 is the only season I truly liked and would recommend. If ENT ran seven seasons, and continued like it was in S4, I'd have liked it overall. But, because it didn't, I don't like the overall show, just that one season.

I think that's fair to say.

Stay tuned for a particular storyline in Season 2. ;)

I'm fine with characters not having plot armor, it's the how and why they're dispatched part that's important. Instead of posting an episode by episode thread, I thought I'd try and watch season 1 all of the way through so I could make enough of my own impressions (granted, I followed a lot of the coverage three years ago so all the major plot points were spoiled, but was at least inoculated against the most controversial parts) then maybe write up something that will definitely elaborate on that in its own thread.

Re: ENT... Fair takes, although I probably found season 3 more nuanced than you, even as someone that was very anti-Bush in the 2000s.

Re: Picard season 2. Ah, yes, I've actually seen that season twice. I was in Mexico for April 2022, and only got back around the time of episode 8, and started the season from the beginning at that point. Since episode 4 was so... hot... in that regard, it'd been spoiled for me. There's a very interesting interview that the SyFy channel website did with Terry Matalas about season 2 that touches on this, and it's interesting to try and read between the lines of how that plot element solidified. My take is they hit an uncanny valley in trying to link "Past Tense" with the present day.

Apparently season 3 will be far more allegorical in it's political elements.

As much as many will disagree with me (perhaps this belongs in the "Controversial Star Trek Opinions Thread") but the way they were dispatched struck me as closer in line with some of Gene's own ideas with Tasha Yar. People die and it's a dangerous time, and there isn't always meaning behind the death, save for how it impacts the people around them. I know this brushes against the comfort food aspect of Star Trek, but I found it worked better than perhaps I expected.

Popcast in a very long stream breaks down Terry Matalas' interview with Trek Movie breaking down the trailer. Again, they've seen all 10 episodes so, while not providing new spoilers, they do add color to it, particularly how the Dominion War connection isn't just a minor footnote and that even the name of Ed Speeler's character would be a major spoiler. They also discuss the YouTube feud with a certain helmeted figure, go over Terry's Tweets of the week, and cover trying to get other NuTrek critics to give Picard season 3 a chance.

Isn't that what Matalas just said? That Vadic is more like an underboss, and there's like a dozen other groups out there just like hers?

I'm wondering if this is Trek's take on the January 6th insurrection?

(A network of terrorist groups attempt to seize control of the Federation? )

If S1 was about Donald Trump and S2 was about Covid, could S3 be about January 6th?

She was the one who refused treatment, they said that in one of the episodes. Maurice wasn't keeping her from it.

While locking her up was questionable, it wasn't because of any anti-science angle. He thought he was keeping her and his son safe.

right, she was locked away to keep her from doing what she did.

Came here for the outlandish over-reactions and complaints about “not real Star Trek with an OPTIMISTIC VISION OF THE FUTURE,” and “why is everything so dark???”

I am not disappointed.

Same drill since 2009. I’m amazed that things can be so consistent, quite frankly.

To be honest the people crying "THAT'S NOT STAR TREK!!" in 2009 aren't the same people crying about it now.
I LOVE the Kelvinverse movies, yes, even Into Darkness though I hated it a decade ago, I like it a lot better now.
I was very much looking forward to DISCO in 2016, got burned hard by it.
Then very much looked forward to PIC, burned even harder by it.
Was very apprehensive to give LD a chance, first episode hooked me right in, loved every episode of it.
SNW, absolutely loved every episode and can't wait for more.

Disc & Pic could have been absolute bangers if the writers tried just a bit.
But unfortunately in current year expecting a good genre show to stick to what could be good is like one in a billion chance.
Look at Halo, Rings of Power, Watchmen, etc. All garbage.

I have other things I need to do. So I'll cut straight to it.

This. Thank you, fireproof78.

For the PIC Season 3 trailer, I need to re-watch it. It's been two days. And instead of talking about it, we've talked about baggage. And yes, it is baggage. Later on, after I get a chance to re-watch it, I'm interested in talking about (get this!) the actual trailer.

I expected TNG's Star Trek VI. That's what was advertised to me.

I don't think the PIC Season 3 trailer was as exciting as this, but I have a better feeling about PIC S3 than I did PIC S2. And I have a better feeling about PIC S3 than I did about three out of four TNG Movies (FC being the sole exception).

I don't know if I'll think PIC Season 3 is as good as or better than PIC Season 1, but I did like the PIC Season 1 trailer better. Here's what that one was.

The PIC Season 3 trailer, from what I got of it, was more "This is a Late Sequel!", which it is. It feels like a late-sequel of the types that come out these days. Nothing to get (mock-)outraged about.

Having never seen the trailer for TUC before that was mind blowing - not least of all because it seems to give away most of the plot and is in such a linear fashion that it almost tells the story!
