Final Trailer!

Oof, no. I'm firmly in the "I really enjoy 3/5 shows currently of Trek" crowd. I love SNW, Prodigy and Lower Decks. I'm rather skeptical of Picard and Discovery, but have still watched them. I grew up on DS9 and Voyager on BBC2 in the UK, which usually tapped out for a rerun of the classic battlestar galatica in its timeslot when they couldn't air either of them. So I suppose a lot of what I feel Trek "is" is viewed through that Lens. (Your own experiences may vary)

I didn't fully appreciate either show until they appeared on Netflix and you could go through them fairly seemlessly rather than waiting for them to appear every Tuesday night at 6.30.

Ooo then it has changed a bit then. Unless it's the "overarching" plot.

Hurray, more places to debate people on the internet!
Well, at least we both like the best New Trek out there: Prodigy.

I am really at a loss about most of modern Trek.
Do these producers really think TNG was an action show?

I mean - ST09 & DIS already had this same problem - but at least they had a cast young enough to sprint through the scene and throw some punches. There's a reason why movie Kirk was mostly just giving commands, and not wrestling shirtless with bad guys. It's so strange.

For those concerned about the lighting... check out the season 2 trailer and compare to the final product. Here's the Blu ray forum review of STP season 2 on physical media's screenshots. The color timing seems different, yes?

Another problem with STP on Paramount+ is the show is released in 1080p but with Dolby Vision. Unless you jack up the contrast on your TV, it can some up dark and undefined. This isn't a problem with SNW, which is done in 4K + DV, so gets the extra bandwidth. Or say Ghosts, which is in 4K but no extra color HDR or DV. Or something older like the original season of Twin Peaks, which is HD but no crazy color high dynamic range color schemes. If it really really bothers you, get Paramount+ through Amazon Prime, which I think shouldn't have the DV. Also look up your TV model on the AVS Forum, YouTube, or other reviews for calibration suggestions for your color settings. I have a Sony OLED, and have to make different settings for normal HD(SDR), HDR, and DV. Look and see if you see something like "peak luminance" -- set that to high. If that still isn't enough, see if there's something like an advanced contrast enhancer.

If you are a Game of Thrones fan, you may remember the controversy over the darkness during the 8x03 Battle of Winterfell. If you get the TV settings right, you can see everything...

Parts of Willow on my TV is unwatchably dark, almost pitch black, unless I turn off the lights in the room.

Personally, I thought the NYCC trailer was better than this one. The week before this final trailer was released, Matalas did say on Twitter that this trailer was harder to put together because they did not want to reveal any plot details. That's why I think it falls into the boom, boom, shoot em up category (although most trailers these days stress the action over the plot). I do agree with the critism about the poor lighting though.

That being said, I'm optimistic this will be a good season. I remember when season two was about to come out, Paramount+ only gave screeners for the first three episodes (pretty much the best episodes of the season) before the season opener debuted. This time, they've given the press the first six episodes (in line with what they did with Season 1 of SNW) which suggests they are more confident in the quality of this season.

What's funny is that this trailer does do something trailers rarely do nowadays. It showcased the production without giving away the story. However, the presentation just seems so random and unfocused, it fails to drum up any excitement from me.

The show comes out in a couple weeks, shouldn't we be getting some story details from trailers at this point? Kewl explosions, intense dialogue and moody set lighting isn't going to pull everyone in.

I'd definitely say so, and Matalas has been busy enjoying the accolades over on Twitter from the people who got to see the full run of 6 episodes.

Its very difficult to judge where the series is going to go from the trailers, which is probably why everyone is so skittish here.

Is it going to be the fifth TNG film? Is it season 8 of TNG? A blend of the two? A hot mess like the last two seasons?

Who knows, spin the wheel to find out!

Terry didn't want to give away any new story beats.

That's my thought. This feels like just another teaser trailer. What do Lore and Moriarty have to do with Revenge Lady's plot? Why are we now just seeing another character with an axe to grind with Picard? There isn't even a cursory presentation of the show's plot.

Given the strong rumours as to the identity of Ed Speleer's character, details might be more likely to drive people away than draw them in. It certainly made me even more pessimistic, and I was already unhappy at the treatment of Jurati & Rios and the return of the TNG cast.

Stupid knee-jerk reactions to anything new/different are unfortunate, and I really don't want to be a cynical douche. Which is why it pains me to say that the trailer was remarkably bad. I'm actually astounded by how much it turned me off.

It looks just plain dismal. It looks every bit as tired and depressing as Nemesis, if not more so.

I just hope that it isn't indicative of the season as a whole.
