Yeah -- Burton does the things Burton does, which is direction and style and design and music. But as you say, this series project originated with G&M, and they brought in Burton afterward (although he had been attached to a couple of earlier film versions -- I would've liked to see the cancelled stop-motion one). So it's no surprise if the writing and storytelling are less "Burtonesque" than the visuals and direction.

I enjoyed the show, but the first episode needed a re-write given where they went with the Wednesday character and her parents later in the season.

I finished the season today. I enjoyed it, even though I wonder if there was 1 too many redirects. Still, it was a fun murder mystery and then you had your typical action finale. I really liked this cast, and while everyone is complimenting Ortega (As they should), I thought the actress who played Enid was great too. I loved the chemistry between Enid and Wednesday, and their scene at the end was emotional and well earned. I hope this series gets another season, and if it does, I would like to see the family more involved. Also, the guy who plays Fester in this series (someone upthread said that was Fred Armison, I didn't recognize him) was great and might have overtook Christopher Lloyd for me. Lloyds Fester was much more shy and introverted (Even meeting Debbie). This Fester had a much more comic personality.

Armisen was definitely playing Fester more in the vein of Jackie Coogan’s TV version.

Overall our family loved the Wednesday series.

But some of the “woke” themes were off.

For one, one of the charms of the Addams Family, at least the TV show, was that the family felt they were perfectly normal, and were blissfully unaware they were “weird”. But now it seems like the Gomez and Morticia are like people who might have grew up in “the movement” but now live life in the suburbs/trendy neighborhoods. (However, the writers don’t seem to realize that).

Also, Enid ‘s parents (or really mom) wanting to send her to “conversion therapy”. Sheesh. The situation was more like a girl her age not yet getting her period…. So something that SHOULD have happened years ago is really a health issue that actually DOES need treatment. Also, the situation is more like a transexual who would say they need surgery/hormone therapy, so they can fully transition.

Also, Joseph Crackstone is supposed to represent the Religious Right…. But totally misses they irony of how he chose methods to get to stop the “Unfaithful” was embracing the very things he says he is against.

Sad about Tyler…. Was he always against Wednesday…. Seems like he genuinely liked her. And Wednesday didn’t seem to have much chemistry with Xavier

Christina Ricci was great as a character seemingly opposite to the Wednesday she played back in the day.

Overall, it was a fun show and look forward to Season 2.

    Nope. It was.

    Because you got that.

    We all did.

    Except them.

Because the Religious Right aren't watching this show.

If they were, and the anvil WAS dropped, it wouldn't make a fucking difference.

They've had decades of anvils. And sense is never floating above their noggins when the impact occurs.

    It's short but hey bloopers

They did double down pretty hard on that whole thing with the same message being done with the siren. It wasn't presented as the parents being so concerned for Enid's health so much as accepting for who she is but I can see where the setup is a bit forced. However, given the number of young people who might watch this it's not a bad thing to be heavy-handed about.

Seeing Gwendoline Christie in a new role was a joy. I almost didn't recognized her at first.
Jenna Ortega fit perfectly for the role. I was worried that she might grow up in the next season and that would shortened the lenght of the series, as it is often happens with teen actors, just to find out she is actually 20 years old. So no more growing, yay!
Netflix have been droping a lot of shows lately, i hope Wednesday will not become one of them. Really enjoyed all 8 episodes. Was such an interesting and refreshing show.

One thing i am curiose, why did they picked Jericho for a town name. Did it had any relationship to the Jericho series from 2006 with the same town name, about life in a post Nuclear Attack town?

Both Jerichos are no doubt a reference to the original Jericho, whose conquest by the Israelites was prominently featured in the Bible. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Jericho

I can see why the 2006 post-apocalyptic series named itself after a city famous for being doomed by God to annihilation (at least within the myth, though real archaeology has turned up zero evidence that it actually happened), but I haven't seen Wednesday yet, so I can only guess that maybe the implication is that the town deserves to be destroyed? Or maybe it has something to do with Rahab, the prostitute who betrayed her people to shelter a couple of Israeli spies and was thus spared with her family when the rest of the adult population was massacred.

Maybe someone else has an absolutely perfect explanation rooted in incredible symbolism that will make me look stupid for writing this, but I don't think the name Jericho has any deeper meaning here at all.

It's just a nicely atmospheric sounding name which is also recognizable enough as a biblical allusion (of the rather bloody variety) to strongly emphasize the town's puritanical origins and heritage.

What @Christopher says may well have influenced their choice but there is a real Jericho, Vermont (not to mention 18 other cities called Jericho in the USA). Do any of them have walls, I don't know.

I mean, you never know these days but it was their most watched "English language" show ever. (I think that qualifier is due to Squid Game?)

The show is set in a highly fictionalized version of the real life town of Jericho, Vermont. The founder of the town in the show, Joseph Crackstone, a Puritan who is immortalized in exaggerated legends, local holidays, monuments, and names of geographical features throughout the area that paint him in a heroic light, is very loosely based on the first European settlers of the town, the Browns, in 1774.

Crackstone persecuted and murdered local women as witches, and was in turn killed by Goody Addams, Wednesday's ancestor, and there is still a deep divide between what the townpeople call the "Outcasts" of the Nevermore Academy and some of the more rigid religiously minded people of the town.

    I enjoyed this.

My main complaint is that pacing of wrapping things up seemed a little breakneck for me. I could have used a few more beats to appreciate the distinction between Wednesday's impulsive (and false) accusations and the truth.

On the plus side, the characters were wonderful. Physically, this version of Gomez is fabulous. Jenna Ortega did a fabulous job. Thing was handled brilliantly.

    Looking forward to season two.

Yeah, I wish there was more reflection on this regard, especially considering how reckless she was with some of those accusations. Hopefully that's something addressed in season two.

You think they are trying to sell it? So strange that after 1 month and such high popularity it wasn't renewed yet.
Jenna Ortega interviews are viewed millions of times. At Jimmy Fallon, from few days ago, already viewed 9.5 million time - that's crazy popular.

Even Kiernan Shipka from Sabrina Netflix show was never this popular. And that show got 4 season.

Renewals don't happen overnight, no matter the success. Same thing with The Sandman. It's far too early to worry about such things.

Seems to be a game Netflix and other streamers play. Maybe to increase viewing.

Perhaps this was intended as a one and done?

Hopefully they are just taking their sweet time seeing if they have a story worth a second season, rather than just running pell mell into ruin as is so often the case.

Nah, the way the season ended, there's no way it was one and done. Lots of storytelling potential remains.

With Larissa Weems (principal of Nevermor Acedemy) killed, i hope Motricia Addams will take her place. Would love to see more Catherina Zeta-Johns in the future series.
