Yeah that's the stock clip of "Scotty" from The Enemy Within; pretty sure it was Eddie Paskey's hands because Doohan had the missing finger, but either way it wasn't Doohan.

I thought in that shot Doohan curled his hand around the controls to hide the missing finger?

I'm pretty darned sure I read there was a stand in but looking at that episode frame by frame you're right. He did curl for that shot.

There's another I'm thinking of later in the episode which uses TEW's clip and another angle that looks like the stand in.

But I may be wrong about that too, so...

I tried to match TEW and TTW and they are not the same clips - the hands have a raised knuckle in one which not present in the other.

Plus the lights on the console are different.

Could they have been two different takes with the same camera setup?

Looks that way. Both shots have the same person operating the transporter.

Those are two different moments from the exact same piece of stock footage. The lights are different because they are blinking on and off to create different display patterns.

The stills are from when Scott moves his left arm to the sliders and one frame before he starts to move both hands downwards. Unless he repeats the same manoeuvre twice, I'm not sure how they can be part of the same piece of stock footage.
The director of The Corbormite Manoeuvre shot several stock scenes in order to make it easier for other episodes, perhaps Scott's hands were on that list?
I will hunt around and see what other stock footage is out there.

To be fair I only used the TEW scene when they try and reunite the dogs, so there may be more even within TEW!

Come on, man. You've got to be kidding me. :) Look at the creases on the left sleeve. Look at the positioning of his right hand, and its shadow, indicating that the actor, the camera, and the lamps are positioned precisely the same in both views. It is the same shot in your (very nice) side-by-side. It's not from two different days, or even two different hours.

When they are purposely creating stock footage, which this was, they don't film one quick glimpse and move on. That would waste the time it took to set up the shot. They'd have the actor work the sliders a bit, back and forth, push some buttons and so on, to give future episode editors some choices to work with. That's what you're seeing.

We also know it really is Jimmy's hands, as evidenced by the missing right middle finger:

Oh, I entirely agree that all the close-ups of Scott's hands were shot at the same time, I just meant that the extracts seen in TEW and TTW were not identical - that they were different manoeuvres, albeit ones which were part of the same stock footage reel.
Apologies if I was unclear in my language.

I've examined "Scotty's hands" scenes in Enemy Within (1 slide up, 1 slide down), Man Trap (slide up) and Tholian Web (slide down). Naked Time has a slide up but it's just part of the same sequence as the one in TEW.
Both pairs of "slide-ups" and "slide-downs" are different in minor but noticeable ways.

Update to my previous post - the footage from The Man Trap wasn't Doohan after all! Or at least wasn't wearing Scotty's uniform, so is different from the other stock footage.

It's from around 20 minutes in, when Kirk is beaming back to the ship.
Could this be your mystery man?

Overall, I'm surprised at how few times the Scotty hand footage was used in Season One. Perhaps it will show up more in Season Two!

looks like he had trouble with the sliders… perhaps that’s why it was re shot?

Thanks for posting that. The red sleeve without stripes is obviously not Jimmy, true. The right hand has its middle finger. But at the same time, it does not match the guy in red Engineering coveralls. That coverall sleeve has a different cut and different fabric. The coveralls are a cotton blend, while the hand close-up is what they referred to as velour. Still, the editorial match-up is close enough for casual viewers, and that's all they needed.

So we know they filmed transporter stock footage more than once. They got Jimmy with his Lt. commander stripes, and this other performer with no stripes. But even so, I could swear I've seen an episode, don't know which, where a no-stripe red shirt is at the controls, and they used the wrong stock footage (Jimmy with stripes) for the hand close-up insert.

Another mismatch, seen in the third season, is the continued use of velour uniform stock shots that don't quite match the synthetic fabric uniforms. My favorite being the overhead bridge shot from "The Galileo Seven" showing up in "The Lights of Zetar."

Oh, shoot, didn't they do that more than once?

Also, other than the instance from "The Man Trap" cited here, was there ever any other set of hands besides Jimmy's shown operating the sliders? For example, Kyle was there often enough (when he wasn't getting KOed from behind with his back to the door by an unauthorized user as in "Space Seed" and "City on the Edge of Forever," sigh) but I don't remember a slider shot with anything that looked like John Winston's hands.

May be old news on this thread, but I was fascinated to read that Janos Prohaska, who created the Horta costume, showed it to Gene Coon, and when he asked what it was Prohaska said "It can be whatever you want." Apparently Coon replied "I'll write a script around it" and wrote this episode in 4 days. The man was pure genius.

Something I only recently realized-- “The devil in the dark” is us humans, not the Horta.

And one thing that always puzzled me is why Shatner claims this as his favorite episode, when his father died. Nimoy and others helped him through, but still it seems strange.

True dat! Gene Coon was amazing, and his leaving the show was the biggest loss to Star Trek, IMO.
It's because thinking about that episode reminds him of how Nimoy and the others helped him through an extremely difficult time. That's the sort of thing that cements a friendship for life.
