That climax of TOD though... "Mola Ram! Prepare to meet Kali... in hell! " That was great to see in an old school theater.

While my opinion of TOD as a whole leaves something to be desired the opening scenes are a banger and the climax delivers with Mola Ram's demise and the children being freed and returning to the village. It's the most effective use of the Indy theme outside of Raiders itself.

I saw all of them as they came out. Only Raiders really works for me. At the time I probably enjoyed LC more than TOD, but that was the typical "we got dark in the second film, it didn't resonate as well with audiences so for the third film we'll kind of redo the first film again" ala Star Wars and Back To The Future (I'd also be fine with if we never got anything past the first BTTF)

They're not gonna recast this late in the game, Not with a character as iconic as Sallah.

I hope this doesn't continue up to the premiere of the movie and John Rhys-Davies gets blasted on the internet :(

On another note. The De-aging tech is DAMN good!

This doesn't look that good right now but I bet it will go by so fast you won't be able to tell it's not that great

Also someone who really enjoyed Crystal Skull. I've always said if that movie was made 4 or 5 years after the third, people would have had a lot less complaints about it. It's an Indiana Jones movie in every single way. It just took to long to be made and people had this hype about what it would be that it could never live up to.

I must have missed this but it really does look good. Where most de-aging fails though is when the character talks, they still don't have the mouth and general facial muscle movement down. Did Ford talk in that segment ( i'm at work now so can't watch the trailer again)?

When Luke appeared for the second time in Boba Fett it was a very noticeable improvement over his first appearance in Mando but it was not perfect, however you could really see the improvement. Let's see how this holds up with a movie budget, even better professionals and hopefully enough time to do it right.

So we tend to mash together related techniques - that appearance in book of Boba Fett - it's not just a deaged Mark Hamill but a body double and a deep fake technique as well depending on what is going on - it might be the same here.

I'm no SFX expert so i don't know if there are competing techniques to de-age people. Deep Fake was used on Star Wars Mando and Boba and for Boba they hired a Youtuber who was apparently very good at it to improve Luke and it showed.

Now not to disparage someone on Youtube but i'm sure he doesn't have the ressources of a professional SFX studio, much less ILM, so the result may be even better even if the Youtuber is talented enough to work there and he does now for the studio that makes the Star Wars show effects, proving that self taught talent can get you in if you get noticed enough.

I don't know if a body double is necessary for Ford, he seems to have retained his physique for the most part, he just sure is not that agile anymore as he was in his 30/40s when he made the Indy movies. If it's necessary to use a body double so be it if we get a good scene out of it.

So, another approach is where the younger version is completely CGI generated and the original actor wears a mo-caption suit - Will Smith did this in Gemini Man. As for body double - we know they are CGIing his face onto stunt double for the horse-riding scenes (it's actually pretty noticeable in the trailer) and they likely do it elsewhere.

Also it's worth noting - even when you see an actor on screen - it's not now a 1:1 representation of how they look in real life. They regularly (and this bit is not discussed much publicly) clean them up in post-production. There are a couple of companies that this is all they do - and they don't discuss it.

Admittedly I haven't seen it in a while, but ToD was always my second favourite after Raiders. I like the darker tone, I like that they tried to do something different and I loved Short Round. In hindsight I appreciate there's some problematic elements there, and a definite white saviour aspect, but on the other hand we get PoC who have agency and who are the bad guys, not just hired thugs, and the idea of a western archaeologist returning a sacred object to the local population rather than stuffing it in a museum is incredibly ahead of its time (on screen at least.) I even don't mind Willie.

Last Crusade on the other hand, as others have noted, just felt too safe and familiar. Much like Jedi it's a case of "remember all those things people loved from the first one? Let's do that again." so we get deserts and Nazis and Christian iconography.

I like the banter between Ford and Connery and it isn't like I hate it, but many of the set pieces always felt very staged and some of the effects are ropey. Don't get me started on that whole opening segment where ever aspect of Indy's look and personality is formed in the space of five minutes, that didn't set me up to enjoy the rest of the film.

I've only seen Crystal Skull once, but I don't recall hating it and at least it tried to do something a little different again. I still recall the nonsense online about how preposterous the notion of Indy meeting aliens was. Wrath of God, magical stones and cups that can confer immortality are fine it seems, but UFOs? Ridiculous!

This trailer did get me excited though and I might commit to a re-watch of the others before five comes out, see if my views have shifted any.

I love the first four Indy films, but am kind of ambivalent towards this fifth one because of the change in director and writer(s).

I'm also just the tiniest bit afraid that the movie is going to pretend that Crystal Skull never happened.

I loved Crystal Skulls (Shia LaBouef aside)...that said all Indy's have some dumb stuff in it.
I'm just looking forward to one final adventure after the long wait.

Each Indy film has had different writers, so no biggie there. I get the worry about Spielberg not directing, but he's still an executive producer and James Mangold has more than proved that he's an excellent director. I'm confident the film is in good hands.

He's at least still married. You can see the wedding band on his finger so Crystal Skull isn't totally forgotten.

I just have a feeling they'll put in a line that Marion died awhile back so they don't have to deal with her/bring up questions about her.

Even if she's not in it, I'd much rather she just be off-screen than another casualty of 'life taking away instead of giving'.

So apparently George Lucas saw a recent cut of the movie and was so impressed that he requested to be brought in as executive producer. The source is the same person who leaked the title last week.

    Right...

...and in other news Bob Iger is asking Lucas to produce Episode 10. His way of apologizing.
