John Hoyt was actually just 59 when he filmed "The Cage", even if he looked older. He lived another 27 years afterwards.Boyce seemed old enough to need to make his way to Talos IV and die from dehydration.
My question is where is Mark Piper?
Transferred prior to retirement.I've been watching a bit and pieces of SNW, especially after seeing SNW's take on the Balance of Terror and I have one question.
What happen to Dr. Boyce?

Still more interesting than his successor Dr. Piper. He died of fan apathy
SF was planning to put "ambassador at large" Robert April out to pasture at 75 before reconsidering.Human life spans have extended, although it seems like human youth has not. They get old as quickly as we do, and then then just keep getting older without dying.
Still, Boyce could have been decades older than Hoyt.
Is there forced retirement?
Picard was in his 80s when he quit?
Agreed.Medical officers come and go sometimes. See also Piper and Pulaski.
No reason to expect that Pike's crew would have no turnover since "The Cage." Heck, even looking beyond doctors, Kirk lost Rand and gained Chekov over the course of his five-year mission.
Pike's crew without Boyce?!?![]()
