Does BBC America still get the show on top of D+? Y'know, for all the people who sill have cable or satellite.

It was recorded on my DVR but I wanted to watch it on commercial free streaming if I could but could not find it anywhere.

HBOM had a million classic episodes but not this one. After I finished watching on the dvr, I later saw it available on AMC+, commercial free.

It may be on the BBC streaming channel but likely with commercials.

As for the logo, nostalgia season calls for a nostalgic logo.

One thing to note in the press release is that it specifically refers to Disney+ having streaming rights to upcoming series of Doctor Who. How the rights to past seasons play out, I don't know, but I can't imagine Disney+ won't be trying to get rights to the whole shebang.

I'm not sure how I feel about this yet. I grew up with that logo, but I don't know if it's the right thing to go back to it. Power of the Doctor hit all the feels without it feeling fan-wanky to me. But going back to this logo seem.... Maybe a little too on the nose for the nostalgia feels. It's like the BBC is saying "Ok, ok.. We heard you. You didn't like the Chibnall stuff. So here's everything old, new again!"

I've heard this before though, was it only rumored/in the works before this?

The assumption had been at the time (if I recall correctly) that BBCAmerica would still have first-run rights, but that instead of subsequently streaming on HBOMax (six months after broadcast or whatever) the new series would later stream on Disney+ (with HBOMax presumably still retaining the streaming rights to 2005-2022 Who).

This is much more exciting news IMO, that Disney+ is going to be the first-run home for Doctor Who in most parts of the world. In this US, it’s a huge loss for BBCAmerica, but for the long term health of the franchise, it’s absolutely the right move, since new (young) audiences were unlikely to discover the show on an increasingly obscure cable channel.

I misunderstood the Disney+ part of this news, and deleted my post upon realizing this.

Steve Roby still somehow still quoted said post, though, so I'm officially retracting what I said here as being a misread.

As an aside, this sucks for HBO Max because it means that the BBC may have made a 'run around' their contract with Warner Bros. Discovery in order to do this deal with Disney since there had been no reported end-date for the HBO Max streaming deal.

My guess would be the deal with HBO Max is with the BBC, whereas the new seasons of Doctor Who will be produced not by a unit of the BBC but by Davies' Bad Wolf Productions. The Disney+ deal is most likely with them as producers of the show. I have no direct evidence to back this up, but it feels right given the existing facts.

The BBC itself announced the new Disney+ deal, so that line of thinking doesn't work.

HBO Max is a wider brand than HBO the network (hence the Max). It has content hubs that are outside HBO’s usual remit.

This Disney+ deal would have thrown a kink into my plan to do a Modern Who pilgrimage starting nextJanuary, but I have all of Modern Who up through the end of the Capaldi Era on DVD; it might be the catalyst for my buying Jodie's Series and Specials individually instead of holding out for a Box Set, though.

There's Westworld and Raised By Wolves and others but they're not much like Doctor Who.

I don't like it.

I'm not keen on it either, though as it's the 60th anniversary year (the "diamond anniversary", amusingly enough), there is a sort of sense to using it and changing it about a bit. It's also much more of a reason than McGann's logo had when reusing Pertwee's (but given a blue gradient). But I hope Ncuti's run gets something new and not just the equivalent of a warm and fuzzy teddy bear. After all, The Three Doctors, The Five Doctors, The Name of the Doctor, and other specials didn't use an emerald hued version of Hartnell's typeface, McCoy's was either by happy accident as "WHO" looks like silver blocks and at that time in the show's history nobody was certain the show would survive 23 or 24, gold revision of the neon logo, etc...

In fairness, it was also cool in 2005 or the general early 21st century, given how many shows were rebooted for nostalgia's sake. If all the show has left is circling the diamond logo and keeping RTD and Tennant around, then future eras won't have a chance. Of course, I'm still bummed over JMS and others losing the chance to do something that's more likely to be fresh and innovative, but they could still have gone a derivative route and if newsy articles are to be believed then RTD2 won't be a rehash of RTD1's greatest indulgences. It's legitimately impossible to say right now.

I think we can safely infer that the BBC is pulling out all the stops to save a nosediving franchise.

It's no coincidence that this "new" logo (which I love) is coming out while Tenant is returning. We've also got RTD returning and he's notable for vigorously stating that he doesn't like returning to past projects. So, who knows what types of carrots and incentives the BBC tangled to get him back. The show is also being produced at Bad Wolf, owned by Sony and now streaming through D+.

So, potentially lots more money, visibility, and promotion while tapping into nostalgia.

But I do think Ncuti will be a fresh new Doctor. I'm guessing that he'll get his own new logo. The retro logo is probably only for Tennant's specials. But we'll see.

So, a little nostalgia to reset the franchise, get those lost viewers back, and then hopefully followed by a fresh new beginning.

I do wonder something: Depending on how long Davies sticks around this time around (I'm betting no more than one, maybe two full seasons depending on finding a new showrunner) if Gatwa will stay longer than Davies.

How long Davies stays will be interesting to see.

I'm actually guessing he'll stay longer. My sense is that he wants to be Emperor of his own Empire. Showrunner writ large. He's talked about having multiple spinoffs and specials. I'm guessing here, but I'm wondering if the BBC offered him greater control, creative freedom, and more money to get his vision off the ground. He might not be involved in the day-to-day stuff for the various shows, like SJSA, but providing the big picture direction.

If that's true, he'll be there for more than a couple of seasons, unless the whole thing flops.

Conversely, I don't see Ncuti staying longer than the traditional three seasons. He's a young guy looks to be going places. He has a bright future. Similar to Tennant. It'll be hard to keep him tied down to a single TV show.

But we'll see. It'll be interesting. Lots of change in the air!
