Wow, that is a great cover for Defiant.

Well, 'canon' or not, I just want to read some good Trek comics. Their series based on the Kelvin timeline never quite jelled for me and while concepts like Mirror War sound interesting, I am still leary of them in terms of overall quality.

However these two series, along with the upcoming Strange New Worlds mini, sound more promising and engaging.

Tie-ins are always approved by the studio people to make sure they're consistent with existing canon or known near-future plans.

Except in the case of the Mirror War: Sisko one shot. No one who ever watched DS9 saw that issue before it was uploaded to my iPad.

Or I can only surmise.

i have to say, im excited for these two new series. and to just see IDW do something fresh and new. My only question is, is this IDW-trekverse set in the prime continuity?

I'll take anything DS9 related, but as a previous poster said, these new IDW comics seem very random.

Is it because there are fewer novels now that the comics are the most popular form of Star Trek literature? Maybe they always were?

I still don't get it. Star Trek: First Contact didn't make either "Strangers from the Sky" or "Federation" invalid. Nor did the DS9 Mirror Universe stories make "Dark Mirror" invalid. The stories are still there and likely had far more impact on me than their live actions counterparts.

Indeed. A good story is a good story, period. I still prefer the Mirror Universe Arc to "The Voyage Home." It explores the damage to Spock more as well as is an interesting story in Mirror Universe. Is it invalid because of ST 4?

It's all fictional, so there is no valid or invalid. They're just different imaginary possibilities.

Is the Theseus a Sovereign-class ship (what a weird choice that name was for an American institution like Star Trek) or a brand new class? Confusingly there are two ships on the ordinary and variant covers.

The Sovereign on some of the covers was a temporary placeholder until the new design was revealed.

They did mention when they announced the new "Star Trek" ongoing series, that it was the start of a "bold new direction" or somesuch, so I guess we are seeing more of that now.

This has to be IDW's fourth or fifth Star Trek "bold new direction" in the past fifteen years.

I still don't get how IDW was allowed to do a premise based on such a questionable interpretation of DS9 episodes, ha. And multiple miniseries at that!
