Spoilers Andor season one

George's decades-old assertion that the Star Wars movies were "for kids" has always been dodgy considering what's in many of them. I mean, Shmi Skywalker is basically raped to death and dies bruised, cut and bludgeoned while tied to a wooden rack inside a Tusken Raider camp so George's idea of "kid's movies" bears some analysis.

To be fair, some of those Clone Wars scenes were cut when they aired on Cartoon Network.

Though the only scene I can think of of the top of my head was the one where Ventress force pulled the clone onto her lightsaber and kissed him.

And at one time Lucas himself was set on doing a decidedly less kid-friendly live-action Star Wars television series. It was going to be called Star Wars: Underworld. And it was going to be "darker and grittier." Who knows how much so, but production staff did make comparisons to Deadwood and The Godfather. Anybody else remember really, really looking forward to this? What a let-down that it never happened. Now, finally, years later we get something that leans a little more in that direction. It's about time!

Some of the Underworld ideas were recycled in new canon. Like Palpatine's first name.
Some were also put into Clone Wars, Saw was originally created for Underworld.

One of the most hilariously inappropriate SW things is when Cad Bane literally tortures a captured Jedi TO DEATH on camera.

This is in an animated series. For kids.

Fairy tales are for kids too and they're full of all kinds of horrific shit. The world is a dark and scary place, and the sooner kids learn how to process that, the better.

IIRC they also cut away from both Vizla's beheading shot, and the bit with all the Black Sun leaders.

Random question because I see this popping up in many places, not just here: What makes something appropriate for Star Wars? How does something "feel" like Star Wars? I run in to this with so many things, Star Trek included, but when I look at the base conceit of things like Star Wars or Star Trek I just don't see how something like a crime thriller is not allowed, but something like zombies is.
Just like with Star Trek, any given fan will consider something "True Star Wars" if they like it, and if they don't, than it doesn't "feel like Star Wars."

I have spoken, so say we all.

There was an exchange between Wolverine and Katie Power in a Chris Claremont written issue of Uncanny X-Men where Katie says she wishes they had fun adventures like Luke Skywalker's instead of the horrible ones that they have, and Wolverine points out that Luke's adventures weren't really very fun either.

The thing that really bugs me with Underworld, is that practically the entire series is written, and the scripts are just sitting gathering dust somewhere. I just can't get over the fact that there are scripts by people like Ronald D. Moore out there that we're probably never going to see or read.

Indeed. It's the same old story. Somehow The Phantom Menace has risen to "true Star Wars level" while Andor doesn't quite fit...yes, I know, it's all emotionally drive; a feeling, as it were. I just amazed at what qualifies sometimes as Star Wars. How time flies. Seems like only yesterday that TPM was being declared noncaon, and people were wishing Lucas sold LFL off to someone who would really use it property.

I don't agree.

I can name a handful of shows I love that I would have never have watched completely if I judged them on the first episode I watched.
But sides are true.
Some shows really are not for some people and it's blatantly obvious from episode 1. Something you miss out if you don't give it time.
I wasted a lot of time hoping Discovery would be good for me at some stage and I was right from the start. Boba Fett I didn't like even before ep.1 because I didn't like him in Mando. After a few episodes I was sure I was right.
Also I am so glad my friend said trust me and soldier through the first few episodes of Community or that my girlfriend was reading The Expanse as the show came out so looked past some ropey bits.

Well, then you get into the whole territory of "new stuff sucks, only the old stuff is good." Now that the Prequels are twenty years old, they can be looked back upon fondly despite being bashed back when they were new. Star Trek follows a similar pattern with Voyager and Enterprise being hated by fans back when they were airing, but nowadays, they beloved classics. Doctor Who fandom actually incorporates this as part of the process, with it being stated when a new episode airs it will be judged to be crap. Then, five years later the episode is to be rewatched and reassessed as a misunderstood gem and much better than the crap which is currently airing.

You're quite right. Despite having seen it before I still struggle with it.

Voyager is now a "beloved classic??" I don't want to live in that universe.

But at least it's no longer the worst Star Trek series of all time.

About the Republic/Separatist ship
The flashbacks in this episode occur during the later years of the Republic, prior to the start of the Clone Wars, with Maarva and Clem worrying about an incoming Republic frigate interrupting their salvage operation. The dead crewers aboard the transport corsair wear uniforms with a symbol closely related to the eventual Separatist Alliance. Travel to Kenari will later be restricted by the Empire due to environmental disaster.

Also it is confirmed that Cassian's pistol is inspired by the Battlefront 1 K-16 Bryar pistol, but different enough that whoever names these things gave it a new model number MW-20
