After a strong start, I thought eps 3 & 4 slumped a bit and fell into too many old GOT tropes. I thought this one was going to go the same way, starting, as it did, with an act of violence against a woman. However, it turned into the best episode of the series so far, even if, once again, an eventful wedding has become a bit of a GOT cliche (and Criston killing Joffrey was a bit reminiscent of the Sand Snake having his skull crushed by the Mountain).

I didn’t see the trailer so I was quite surprised to see from comments here that Viserys will still be around in the next episode, especially with the time-jump. I’ve read Blood & Fire but I’ve forgotten the minutiae, so I thought that he had died at the end of this episode.

Milly and Emily will be hard acts to follow and farewell Theo Nate, we hardly knew you. I’m hoping we haven’t seen the last of Ser Otto, though, I’ve really enjoyed Rhys Ifans’ performance so far.

I didn't watch the trailer until after I read this post. I guess the King isn't dead! That would have been a big departure from the book if they killed him off this quick. Those leeches must do the trick.

I thought the same as you until I saw the trailer.

Remind me never to be someone named Joffrey in Westeros

Book Spoilers for events in this episode
According to the books, Criston kills Joffery during a tourney and it's ruled an accident, so this is an interesting departure

I just realised that the older Aegon T in forthcoming episodes will be played by Ty Tennant, son of Georgia and David Tennant. He actually looks quite like David, despite the fact that DT is his adoptive father, not his biological one.

So by episode 5 HoD gave us two things GoT failed to give us.

    1) Somebody *finally* wearing a green dress when they're supposed to after seasons and seasons of Tyrells in washed-out blue.
    2) People freaking dancing during a fest/celebration. GoT was really, really weird in that there was never any dancing during any of its weddings or noble feasts. And it's not like Medieval court dances are *that* difficult to coordinate.

I kind of liked Daemon's wife and was a bit disappointed she died so quickly.

The dancing was fun! It did make it feel different from GOT. I enjoyed how many characters showed up at the wedding, each with their own agenda and developing allegiances.

Indeed. The show's time jumps and underdevelopment/rushing of plot points is similar to GoT S7/8 but people seem fine with it.

The time jumps are much worse in the book. The show is actually taking it slow in comparison.

The episode opens up differently, feels like a breath of fresh air, and with a new interesting char–

    Oh. She's already dead.

What a waste. And now back the usual repeated stuff of the season.

Rhaenerya and Daemon continue to be the only interesting characters but that still doesn't do enough to get me really engaged. A shame since Milly Alcock really has given it all she could and now her watch is ended. She deserved better.

I've been curious to see Ty's work since I don't think I've seen him anything yet. And yet I've already seen one of his younger siblings already, Olive, who appeared in both The Five(ish) Doctors Reboot and much more recently, Belast.

This show seems to be doing a much better job, overall, of costuming its characters more appropriately than GoT generally did. Not only with your example, but also they had the Royces wearing their distinctive bronze armor, whereas "Bronze" Yohn Royce in GoT just wore generic armor without even a hint of bronze.

Was Michelle Gomez in that one? We can create our own whack Doctor Who fan fiction.

Not similar at all GOT didn't have time jumps. The time still moved at the same pace but suddenly you could run from the fist to the wall or ride from Kings Landing to Winterfell in an evening.

Can I suggest we spoiler trailer stuff too. Obviously you expect spoilers of episodes seen but I avoid "next episode" trailers because they show too much and posts above have kinda ruined a surprise for me.

The costume designer for Got was brilliant in many ways, inmy opinion and managed to create a style that was quite unique to the show.
But she did have some hangups (including, apparently, a personal crusade against the colour green)
The costumes themselves were very pretty, but since she eventually (by season 3/4 or so) fixated on one colour and style per character (or even for whole groups of characters) they ended up blending together.
And every female character who had the potential to be Cersei's younger and more beautiful queen (Sansa, Daenerys, Magaery and Brienne) had to be dressed in pale blue for much of the series.

In contrast HoD costumes are a lot more varied, which honestly, I prefer.

I’ve a vague recollection that the makers or designers of GOT said that they didn’t want to have the various house sigils and emblems on the costumes, as were frequently described in the books, because they didn’t want them to look like superhero costumes. So I’m pleased to see that many of the costumes do feature the sigils of the house of the person wearing them. And it can be explained in-universe as having fallen from fashion by the time of Ned Stark et al

Weird episode, again a lot of slow plodding stuff that could have been done in 1 or 2 episodes of GOTs. Daemon comes off as the most uninteresting villain ever, he pops in now and then to stir up shit but there's no real threat or nasty streak to him (compared to characters of GOTs) he's just there, doing stuff with no real impact on anything and his character feels unintentionally pathetic.

Why did the Knight Cole attack? We don't even seen him losing his patience or what was the ultimate trigger point to what was boiling inside him. For an episode of television that just felt weird.

The good point? Queen Alicent comes into her own and of all the characters we've seen in the show so far she comes across as the most potentially dangerous, well aware of what she will face and already putting thoughts into motion while other characters mess around dancing and talking big. Love Queen Alicent's theme too when she walks in.

Give it a few years. Some movie or streaming show will make it happen.

You would have thought the writers would have been able to fill out 10 episodes of story and leaving the change of actors to season 2. It's going to be so jarring midway through season 1 to recast key characters. Speaking of that, why does Matt Smith still look the same age in the trailer for episode 6

    Timelord Magic there.

I've been watching Matt's Doctor Who run. Often on the same day I watch House of Dragons. He looks the same.
