Spoilers Game Of Thrones’ Spinoff ‘House Of The Dragons’ ordered to series

I mean, both universes have an imperial dynasty of dragon riders...

 

I didn't make this connection but apparently the Tagaryen blade with the Song of Ice and Fire prophecy that Viserys shows Rhanerya is the same blade that had such a sordid story in Game of Thrones, starting as Littlefinger's assassin blade against Bran that eventually came to Arya's possession which she used to kill Littlefinger himself and then the Night King.

 

I thought that thing looked familiar!

 

I don't mean to be "that guy" but I picked up on it right away, the hilt is very distinctive. I doubt that backstory had been thought up when they were making GoT but it's nice that they retroactively turned that into the weapon that ended the Long Night, albeit not by the hand of the Prince That Was Promised.

 

Yeah according to ASOIF wiki, it hasn't been mentioned outside of the main series of books, its history starts with the first book.

 

Yeah, also not wanting to be "that guy" but I also realized that right away, but that's probably because I liked the design aesthetic for Game of Thrones and both with it, and with House of Dragon I often re-wind and re-watch scenes while I'm watching just to look at the costumes, sets and artefacts.
Honestly I think that's a bit too much. As somebody else here said, it's on the same level as Star Wars revealing that the two robots on Leia's ship were originally built by Anakin.

Huh, I couldn't remember that, probably because I have blocked that stupid "plot twist" out of my mind like so much after Season 4.

That was quite the ending.

 

Looks like next week is when we get the new actors for the younger characters based on the next time on trailer.

 

Not only the best episode of the series to date, but right up there with the best episodes of Game of Thrones.

I'm a bit confused with what they're going to do now though. We know there's a timeskip and the new actors will be playing Rhaenyra and Allicent. If it goes by the book narrative, they'll both have kids who are teenagers as well. But the show seems to be hurrying along the death of the King as well, and he just doesn't seem well enough here to linger on for another 15 years or so.

 

That was a really good episode. I wasn't expecting the death of the King this quickly. This is definitely more interesting than the book so far.

Matt Daemon Targaryen being chaotic actor be wed and bed his own niece. Never fails to entertain.

That time jump for next episode though. Things are getting interesting. Surprised to see old king Viserys still hanging on 10 years later.


Those 3 brown haired babies Rhaenyra had. Mixing the blood of a race horse with the blood of a cart horse. Kicking the dragon's nest in view of the Hightower. Not a good look. War is coming.

 

Ahh, there is our good and noble man doing something f-ing stupid that leads everyone to burn the kingdom to the ground. I was wondering when we were going to get that moment.

Daemon is fascinating. Easily the best character in this show so far (though I quite enjoy Rhaenyra as well). He's an awful person. But he's just so damn genuine where his family is concerned, even when he has no real reason to be. He's kind of the opposite of GoT's Tyrion, who played at being a terrible person while hiding a true and noble core. Matt Smith plays him equal parts sinister and earnest and it just feels so delightfully fun to watch.

I'm curious if Rhaenyra has truly bought into the prophetic Kool-Aid the way she claims, or if she's just using it as an excuse to chase power. In previous episodes it felt like she truly hated the responsibilities and duties of the throne and only craved power for the freedom it could offer her. But Crestin offered her a different kind of freedom and she shot him down. Though I also wonder how much of it is her recognizing that even as a nameless nobody who could love and be herself freely she would always be expected to be subservient to her husband and she just can't accept that. As the Queen of Westeros she gets to be the boss of even her marriage in a way that no other woman would be able to.

I legitimately worry about the time jump next episode. I have grown so attached to Milly Alcock's take on Rhaenyra it's going to be an adjustment to see someone else take on the role.

 

I'm curious to see the new actors take their positions. I don't know the book, but hope they pump the brakes and settle into a "present".

Another good episode. Not sure about Criston losing the plot at the end - will keep a close eye on the lead up when I re-watch.

 

I like the 5th episode so far. In fact all the episodes have been from good to excellent for me so far. None of them have dissapointed me so far. I like seeing House Velayrion and House Hightower. Those two houses were not featured in the GOT as far i know. Did they go extinct by the events of GOT ?

I am just curious. Why did Ser Cristen Cole attack the Knight of Kisses ? Wasn't the Knight proposing a secret ailliance with Ser Cole during the banquet. Why would that trigger Ser Cole ?

 

Rhaenyra is similar to book and early GOT Cersei and late series Daenerys. She wants to be queen out of vanity. Not because she has big ideas or wants to reform the system.

Being a nobody wouldn’t suit her. She does like Ser Cristen but giving up her birthright as the future queen is out of the question.

Ser Criston took his oath as a Kingsguard and vow of chastity very seriously. Sleeping with the princess not only makes him an oath breaker but it’s an act of treason. Other Kingsguard who break their oaths like this have their manhoods cut off, a hand cut off and sent to the wall for good measure. Taking the virtue of the princess, Ser Criston was looking at a death sentence, after everything I listed above.

With more and more people finding out, Ser Criston snapped at Joffrey Lounmoth and silenced him for good. Planning to kill himself afterwards. The queen stopped him though and protects him going forward. Ser Criston will be Kingsguard to Aegon II, and support his claim against Rhaenyra going forward.

 

Rhaenyra is basically Cersei done right - Cersei with more nuance to her character. She's someone who has a tremendous chip on her shoulder about being born a woman in a world where the choices of women are very much constrained. What she most desires is total freedom to do whatever she wishes, without consequence. She's very much not a good person, as she's completely self-centered. You can see this in the show - she's literally never shown any concern for any other person, only her own standing. Even Daemon is (despite being a murderer) arguably a better person, as he seems to show some genuine concern for his brother and niece.

 

The rest aren't any better. Corlys wants his family to marry into the royal family over pride for his wife and his own family. Otto Hightower wants a grandchild, especially a grandson, on the Iron Throne. He had passed this ambition upon his daughter, Queen Allicent. She finally embraced this ambition because she had felt betrayed by Rhaenyra's lie. Which made her something of a hypocrite, considering she had lied through omission about her early relationship with Viserys. And then we have Ser Criston, who had not only blabbed to Allicent on what happened between him and Rhaenerys, but whose behavior at the wedding party had been dictated by his own sexual jealousy. He should have known better, as a member of the Kingsguard, than to get involved with the Princess in the first place. Or he should have remained silent. There are no heroes and heroines in this story. This is why so many have compared this series more to "Succession" than "Game of Thrones" itself.
