Pine modeled his Kirk after Han Solo?

That wasn't a Wookie we saw in TOS...that was a wig!

 

I really don't think people need to read too much into these comments. In the end Pine will be portraying Kirk as the script and the director tell him too. Unless you think Abrams is going to instruct him to act like Han Solo, and unless you think the script was written with Kirk acting Han Solo, then you're not going to see Pine playing Kirk acting like Han Solo or Indiana Jones.

Now if he had said he was modeling his performance on Kathryn Mulgrew's Captain Janeway, I'd be worrying.

Taking a few cues from Harrison Ford is a great idea. Bottom line, he's the quintessential leading man. Certainly over the last 30 years or so.

Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Blade Runner. Great stuff.

 

Kirk didn't seek out the confrontation with Khan. He didn't relish the idea of going back in time to find humpback whales, but he knew he had to do it. He wasn't thrilled about being the olive branch to the Klingons in TUC, but it was forced upon him and he did it.

Kirk was an explorer and he had plenty of adventures. But he didn't seek out the conflict. He didn't relish it. But once in it, he threw himself into the task the same way Jones did. He was good at it, and he did it with humor.

I never saw Kirk as a swashbuckler or a warrior. Kirk had an intellect that drove his curiosity the same way Jones did. And like Jones, that curiosity often threw him into situations that required him to be an action hero. He didn't want a career mapping star charts, but adventure did find him more than he found adventure.

 

Perhaps, throughout Kirk's early adventures in interstellar space, he comes to realize that he loves venturing out into space after all, and his reluctance gradually vanishes to the point of it becoming replaced with full on acceptance.

 

Kirk as an adventurous space swashbuckler with a bit of humour?

That could work.

 

I just hope Kirk doesn't owe a really fat person a whole lot of money. Kinda hard to be a dashing starship captain with a bounty hunter or two after him...

I'm with Franklin. A touch of Indiana Jones in Pine's portrayal of Kirk shouldn't be too bad. We'll see come May 2009.

 

Seriously? I never knew this. And I've seen every Bogart movie still in existence.

Probably fairer to say that the writer modeled Solo on Bogart's character persona ("I stick my neck out for nobody") than that Ford did - but then, popular as he may be and good as he is in his limited way, Ford's always been very much of the don't-bump-into-the-furniture/"where's my check?" school of movie acting.

This works fine for me. Solo and Kirk have a fair amount in common. Besides, it's really the script that will make or break this movie (as in most films).

 

Writing-wise, Francis Ford Coppola was also an influence. That's more evident in earlier drafts, though, when the character that became Solo had a beard.

I said space swashbuckler, as in Han. I rather liked Jack Sparrow; but he's probably taking the tongue-in-cheek a little too far to channel Captain Kirk.

 

Neither did I. Honestly, I think Harrison Ford modeled Han Solo after Harrison Ford; That's probably how he made a successful billion dollar career out of playing the 'every man'.
