Pine modeled his Kirk after Han Solo?

I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror and were suddenly silenced.

I can see it a little. Roguish charm with a twinkle in the eye and a quip.

First reaction is "WTF?" but I guess that's his answer to "young and brash starship captain."

It could be fine, but one wonders why he just didn't model it on the first-season TOS Kirk.

You know, I suppose it could explain a couple stills that were leaked to me earlier in the day:

Zachery Quinto as Spock lectures a group of cadets on how to bulls-eye a womprat in a T-16.

Leonard Nimoy as Spock uses a modified T-65 X-Wing to travel back to the 23rd Century.

Before this thread goes into the "Oh no its Star Wars" path it will eventually I would like to highlight the important bit that places the alarming thread title in a bit more context.

Actors take their inspiration where they can, the method for producing what comes across on screen or stage isn't some simple straightforward thing and must be discovered over and over again in each performance. Actors have different ways of finding their characters.

I can see a certain danger in only looking at Shatner as the model lest the result turns to parody filled with "Shatnerisms" rather then Kirk.

Could be a lot worse, he could have channeled Luke Skywalker... or Anakin...

    Bogart, very badly.

Sure, I can live with Kirk Solo. No problem.

Well, the only real difference is that Solo also flew the ship and had 70's hair. So he's like Kirk and Checkov put together.

I always assumed that Harrison Ford based his brief stint in Carbonite on Archer's stiff delivery.

I had the requisite cringe when I read this, but as one Starfleet captain once said, "I can live with it."

One thing: Not so sure that I agree with Pine when he speaks of bringing an "accidental hero" quality to Kirk. If anything, I think Kirk wanted to be a hero. That was simply who he was. If anybody had an "accidental hero" mentality, I should think it would be Christoper Pike instead of James T. Kirk.

Of course... this may not even come through in Pine's performance. So, no worries.

He starts running around with a Wookie sidekick, however? Then I'll be worried. :p

    that'd be me :p

don't like it ONE bit. no sir. fine, I'm hardcore, but I don't think Kirk was a RELUCTANT hero. I hope this doesn't turn out to be a humongous mistake. I've heard that he's a good actor, so my fingers are crossed...

It's gonna be fine. As long as he doesn't show up on the Enterprise carrying a whip complaining about snakes, I'll be fine. Pine is gonna be Kirk. That's it.
