Who says it would even be Starfleet who restored the ship? It could've been outsourced.

I think in-universe, someone would want to restore the second most famous Enterprise if they had the means to.

I'm from Massachusetts, and I visit Plymouth from time-to-time, where they have the Mayflower II. It was built in 1957 and is a replica of the original Mayflower that brought the Pilgrims over. Do they need it? No. Did someone want it and was able to make it happen? Yes.

Need and want are two different things.

My god-sister's husband is a car guy. A huge car guy. He loves restoring classic cars. It's a hobby. People like this probably still exist in 2401, even if it's not with cars.

Precisely so. How much time, money and energy is wasted* in restoring old things? And that's in current socioeconomic circles where such things will cost a lot of money, depending on the project. Wasn't there a Galileo shuttle restoring project or something? Why bother?

*note: my tone is very much meant as sarcastic. I would think the restoration industry would be more active in the 24th/25th century with post-scarcity resources, not less. Calling it a waste, when there are whole industries today devoted to restoration of older things is probably one of the odder things I've seen written of late.

Starfleet probably has the Enterprise-D molecular profile on record from scans which would be even better for restoration.

Loath though I am to bring this up,
I thought RMB already stated the season takes place in 2411, with celebrations for the Federation's 250th anniversary going on?

Reminds me of that episode of Stargate set in the future where the SGC is a museum.

He has to be mistaken. It might be the 250th Anniversary of founding of Starfleet, not the Federation. 2411 is too much of a jump. The characters' ages and the actors' ages wouldn't match at all. And how long it's been since TNG wouldn't match either; it wouldn't even be in the ballpark.

2401 still works, IMO, especially since we didn't get to see much of it in Season 2.

Of course time and energy are a factor. We still need energy to power this post scarcity society. It's post scarcity in that the material needs of the population (clothing, shelter, food & drink, education, medical care, social infrastructure...) are easily met, not in that we have unlimited energy for infinite starship construction. Plus we're still mortal (our time is literally limited) and Starfleet has a lot it's trying to accomplish at any given time, so allocating personnel and man-hours to anything like this is not a given. Plus - though the Dominion War may have ended - it's scars remain and it was followed by a Romulan coup and barely thwarted biogenic attack on Earth, the Klingons giving the Pakleds a big tech boost, whatever ends up happening to the protostar testbed ship, the destruction of Utopia Planetia, the destruction of Romulas and subsequent political turmoil (including 4 members threatening to leave), the loss of Ambassador Spock, the retirement of Picard and Riker, the near destruction of all biological life by a cosmic interdimensional super synthetic being, the Q dying (?) with no explanation...It'll unfortunately likely be a while before Starfleet relaxes it's military preparedness again (Hell, if you go by Star Trek Online they will also be going through another Klingon War, an Iconian War, time travel shenanigans, Kzinti aggression, Hurq invasion and Mirror Universe troubles that'll take us to 2411 at least).

Matalas said in a tweet quite a while ago that season 3 is set about a year and a half after season 2.

So Starfleet doesn't do it but a passionate fan. Ot a historical society to restore the ship.

I cannot believe this is an unfathomable idea in this fandom...:wtf:

I don’t think it’s a bad idea or one that shouldn’t be done. I just don’t think starfleet or even a passionate fan would actually build a fully functional stardrive section to mate with the original saucer.

would starfleet (or said superfan/collector) take a super damaged hulk of a stardrive rescued from the war that was no longer space worthy and use it. Maybe restore the exterior plus a few key sections, like the shuttle bays, main engineering (complete with non-functional but pulsating warp core) and the battle bridge and attach it for a tour. Yeah, I could absolutely see that. But a brand new off the line, ready for action stardrive just seems unrealistic.

I didn't say "brand new, off the line" and apologize if that was implied. More my thoughts was this:
a: post scarcity means they can do whatever they want and historical recreation strikes me as an eminently worthwhile goal.
b: Starfleet is an organization of tradition and respecting history. A recreation, even a basic one, would do well for a museum piece.
c: I don't see this as problematic in terms of creating something basic for a museum piece.

That's it. That's all. That people find this objectionable is mind blowing.

Yeah, I took it as you guys wanted a brand new fully functional stardrive. Like I said, restoring something that would never fly again and plugging it in does make sense.

I doubt they would recreate every room, every Jeffries tube, etc…though. Just the more “touristy” areas.

    Or mostly a holographic interior.

Regardless, it's history and it's nice to recreate that with as much as possible using the saucer. And I don't even care about the D and I'm the one arguing for it!:wtf:

So Picard and his crew is going to steal the Enterprise D from the Starfleet Fleet museum? I doubt that Starfleet is going to give the Enterprise D to Picard or give him any starships to use. Which would give Picard no choice but to steal it. There would have to be a reason for him to do it? Maybe Bok came back and kidnapped Picard real son or daughter or both with the help from Sela. Which would also mean that his kids are being held in enemy territory. It probably some new type of aliens that haven't been seen before. Or, it could be a alliance lead by Sela, and Bok and the leader of the followers of the Duras family.

So, you already know what's going to happen. Isn't the word speculation is in the title of this tread? Beside, my post is just a speculation of what might happen in season three of Picard.
My other speculation was that some private company salvage the ship off of Veridian 3; And they gave the Enterprise D to Picard to command. Who would own that salvage company? Geordi La Forge of course. He would had need of a star drive. It wouldn't need to be the type of star drive, as long as in connect to the saucer. But, likely it is the right one.
