What do people think of SNW (spoiler free please)

I'm at Episode 5 of Strange New World's S1 and I must say the show works if you treat it more as an extension of the overly lavish, still believable The Motion Picture and not the relatively shoestring, boxed in TOS show that is deeply rooted in the 60s (like TNG was rooted in the very late 80s and 90s).

Kurtzmann era Star Trek has properly found its footing and we're now truly in Star Trek's 2nd Renaissance with not only SNW but with DSCO becoming a genuinely mature show with S4, PIC even at its worse still watchable (with a barnstorming final season promised), plus Lower Decks getting much better than it easily could've been.

All in all I think there's more to like about it than not like.

I still prefer DSC and LDS. I prefer SNW to PIC though to be fair the two are polar opposites.

I love the design work on SNW, plus whilst the cast has been strong throughout, certain members (Olusanmokun, Horak, Bush) have been phenomenal.

it's a good show. A solid show. It's a little toothless in places, but overall a strong first season.

The Motion Picture was a semi-hard re-boot on hindsight (judging by the USS Enterprise's really drastic "revamp" and massive production upgrades with the Vulcans and Klingons, etc).

I find it odd nobody said, "hey this is just like Nomad!" because in real life, you'd link those events. But for the purposes of TMP, that episode never occurred.

Just got done episode 8. Damn that was a little tough to watch, especially since I have a daughter. I'll keep it spoiler free in keeping with the thread, but even understanding everything it was tough.

Definitely my favorite of the Kurtzman era shows. Definitely plenty of continuity that carries through the show, but I love that they made this show much more episodic. It's great to watch episodes where the primary plot is developed and concluded in the same episode. I know the trend these days is for season long story arcs. But it's great to have a show go against the grain. I really hope they continue that trend in season 2. It's nice to have at least one live action show that is episodic and not serialized.

Plus I think it's a positive because it allows them to actually do more things. Having to come up with a story for each episode allows them to actually do more 'exploring' in many ways.

One of the things I really like about this new era of Star Trek is that all the shows are so different from one-another. Discovery is a highly-serialized adventure show about overcoming trauma. Picard is a character-driven introspective deep-dive. Lower Decks is a slightly-meta adult animated sitcom. Prodigy is a children's adventure show about the importance of finding unity in diversity. And Strange New Worlds is a traditional episodic action-adventure show. Lots of different flavors for different tastes.

Well, fresh off of finishing episode 10, my opinion remains unchanged. I liked it, but did not love it. Good beginning, meandering middle, great finale. I'm a very character-driven entertainment consumer and while I didn't dislike any of the characters, none of them really clicked for me. On, and there's far too much emphasis on Spock's sex life.

There can never be too much emphasis on Spock's sex life.

Weirdly enough, Spock is one of the great discoveries and joys of this series - after nearly six decades, it turns out that there's far more dimension to his character than had ever been explored in official Trek. To some extent, I think that's a result of getting Kirk off the goddamn stage, and giving Spock a more interesting and diverse group of characters to play against than TOS provided.

Psst - They hoped the die hard Trek fans in the viewing audience wouldn't catch on to the fact it was a $40 million remake of TOS S2 - The Changeling; and they weren't going to assist them in realizing it.

It gets an absolute yay for me. I love what I've seen so far and can't honestly wait to see more.

I’ve watched it now and completely agree, best Trek since 2005 by a long shot.
