What do people think of SNW (spoiler free please)

The only thing that kept me going was how much I like Anson Mount's Pike.

But some of the story ideas I could see being quite interesting. But they desperately need an editor, in my opinion. Scenes that are there to add some extra depth are fine, but I tend to feel they drag on too long in SNW. Get going to the plot quicker.

The 21st century era slang always takes me right out of the worldbuilding. For me, that's just like one of those things where you need to think in terms of balance. You can't use all new terms, but you should stick to ones that have been around for centuries.

The writing of the Vulcan characters was pretty poor (in my opinion). They didn't seem 'alien'. Their attitudes/personalities were all too human.

I couldn't stand the new take on Uhura. Waaaaaaaaaaay too 'green' to be believable. She should still be at the Academy learning, not in deep space.

Obviously, these feelings are meant to be my own. I would not suggest, nor do I demand, that others feel the same.

Nope.

The problem with this is that many phrases have been around for centuries and still used. So, to me, it's perfectly realistic to see 21st century slang still used.

Only just around to watching the series (got a 7 day Paramount+ free trial so decided to binge!) - I think the series is excellent! Enjoy almost all the cast and characters, stories are good and entertaining, and I actually wanted more once I'd finished an episode!! Definitely a high point in recent Trek for me.

I have to confess I have mixed feelings about the series, even though I expected to adore it. It’s good, but it just doesn’t grab me as much as I feel it should.

The cast is great, although Ortegas is a tad smug for my taste and I could live without her. Anson Mount is a charismatic lead although at times I felt he was on autopilot—but that could be the laid back nature of the character. When the script calls for him to step up he really does. Ethan Peck is superb, and I love Rebecca Romjin, too, and feel she was sadly underused.

The problem so far is the fact that many of plots have been highly derivative, not just of past Trek (“oh, this is their Naked Time episode …this is their Balance of Terror…this is their Masks/generic holodeck episode…this is Balance of Terror again, revisited—quite literally!”) but also liberally “borrows” from other media, including notably “Alien” and an Ursula Le Guinn story. I hope for more originality in the second season —and also a little more creative risk.

Strangely, on one hand it feels like the writers are playing it very safe, determined not to do anything that might incur the wrath of fans and gatekeepers…while at the same time playing it fast and loose with established Trek lore. In some ways I find it easier to take this as a reboot of alternate universe series than something connected to TOS timeline…and I’m fine with that. A lot of that goes down to the changes in personality of existing characters (step forward Nurse Chapel), to race (Kyle will also be a blonde middle aged Englishman to me, sorry) and age (somehow, between the end of SNW and season two of TOS M’Benga will go from a middle aged specialist to a twenty or thirty-something junior doctor). I can live with it though.

For me, there is kind of an MCU feel to tone: it’s often heavy on the banter and quips and some of the 21st century phrases strike a false note with me too (it’s maybe just me but I can’t stand hearing people say “you got this!” It’s an expression that’s only crept in the last few years).

It’s a good series, if not, in my opinion, quite as good as the consensus suggests. It delivered a solid and assured, if derivative, first season. I’m hoping it will develop into something something a bit bolder, a bit edgier, and have less reliance of reusing past plots and, indeed, TOS characters, especially if their reinterpretation doesn’t ring true to the characters we knew. It should be a BIG universe out there. Plenty of scope for new characters. When they release the blu ray I look forward to rewatching and seeing if my opinion changes any.

I’ve noticed a lot fans react very badly to even the slightest criticism of SNW, so throw me your worst, I don’t care. I’ve said what I think and i think it was well balanced and fair criticism.

I think it is very safe Trek. I'm disappointed by Kirk's appearance, and will just be satisfied with one season.

I don't normally post in this forum, in fact I haven't in over three months, but this pretty much sums up what I think word-for-word.

Yay! SNW has quickly proven itself to have a lot of the spirit of TOS, but it hasn't lost sight of its own identity. Don't get me wrong, I like DSC and PIC, but the episodic style of SNW is a nice one to have back.

Captain Potsie, please report to the bridge. Bring security chief Ralph Malph with you...Aaaaaaaaaaa! ;)

Anson Mount. The one with the magnificent hair.

Oops, I totally messed up. Anson Williams…you can maybe tell I’ve been watching 90’s Trek again and got my Trek wires crossed. Anson Mount’s hair is indeed almost becoming an epic mount!

I finally had time to watch episodes 3-6
And my positive reaction to the show is unchanged, I like all the characters, I think hey are all multi-layered and human and all have interesting story potential. I like the dynamics between them, I love this version of Pike as a Captain and I love this version of Uhura.
I think the storylines are very enjoyable and manage to shift their tone to tell the story of the current episode ranging from light hearted and humorous to sombre and sincere as needed.
Occasionally I think that a specific episode would be more at home in a 20 episode season rather than one with 10 episodes, but that's acceptable.

And I freaking *love* the production values, camera work and set design. Some scenes look like they are out of a movie. This isn't a Star Trek anymore that has to scale down things so that they will fit into a 1960s/1980s/1990s TV budget, this is a Star Trek that can really tell the stories it wants.

I'm looking forward to watching the remaining 4 episodes and hope they are just as good as the first 6.
