What are your controversial Star Trek opinions?

In 2402 the Enterprise-E would be 29 years old. The original 1701 passed this milestone somewhere between The Motion Picture and The Wrath of Khan.

Beta canon has the Enterprise-B being lost in deep space after 36 years of service. The original Excelsior herself is revealed in the background information for Picard to have retired from active service at the age of 35, so it seems likely that 23rd century starships were designed for a roughly 40-year lifespan (with some Excelsiors, Mirandas, and Constellations far exceeding this).

We know the Galaxy-class was designed for a 100-year operational lifespan, and it seemed unremarkable for the Enterprise-D to still be in service at the age of 32 in the anti-time future we see in TNG: "All Good Things"; it seems unlikely, therefore, that the Sovereign-class was designed for anything less than a 50-year lifespan. There is zero reason the Enterprise-E couldn't still be in service, especially with a Constitution-style major refit to keep her at the cutting edge. I am not interested in seeing yet another brand new Enterprise I have no emotional investment in.

considering the Connie’s were in service for at least 40-50 years (albeit with refits) and Excelsior Class ships (some with refits) served for at least 75-100 years I find it hard to believe a Sovereign Class would be decommissioned after 30.

If it were destroyed or crippled to the point it couldn’t be fixed, that’s one thing. But short of massive design flaws, just putting a ship out to pasture seems odd.
Diplomacy. If a ship resembles their wartime posture they may want to retire the E as a diplomatic or PR move to show a new era to the quadrant after the Dominion War, and Romulan crisis. I don't find it odd at all when we are reputedly told it's a post scarcity economy so redoing a ship should be a minor inconvenience at best.

NEMESIS was TERRIBLE. Not just as a ST film, but a scifi film. I'd even go as far as a film in general.

But it did do one thing well... it gave Worf a massive character moment from just one line.

"The Romulans fought with honor."

And he said that with no one bringing them up or anything. Given his hatred of Romulans and how he holds the word 'honor' so dearly, that moment deserved a shout out.

even post-scarcity, decommissioning a ship just because it was designed to fight The Borg and later The Dominion seems like a waste. Especially since we see Sovereign Class ships as part of that armada at the start of Picard S2.

it would be far more believable that the E-E (assuming it wasn’t destroyed) is simply assigned to standard duty and not just retired. I mean, we do see it on diplomatic duty during the war in Insurrection and post-war in Nemesis.

Shouldn't be the flagship. Get rid of it.

why because it was built more to be able to handle its self in a fight than to carry around kids and old folks?

Besides, was it ever explicitly called the flagship? The only one I recall having that designation was the E-D until they said that the Discoprise was the flagship in SNW.

And the Kelvin Enterprise.

Why? PR.

I'm just going to say it, "City On the Edge of Forever" is not the best episode of TOS or even a top 10 in all of Star Trek. Edith's death was telegraphed from the moment they met her. Knowing that, and knowing Kirk could never really get involved with a women from the past makes it just too slow getting to not looking both ways before crossing the street. It could have been a PSA about how to cross the street and not to jaywalk.

Someone should do a psa ending.

Can we have a ship not named the USS Enterprise be "The Flagship" of the Federation.

As much as I love the USS Enterprise, that seems weird that only one ship name would hold the title of "The Flagship" of the Federation.

Well, I guess that's what makes this a controversial opinion

Indeed. Cheers.

I would agree it’s not the best TOS episode (hello Balance of Terror) and not a top 10 all time Trek. But a top 10 TOS…I’d go for that.

the only Enterprises I think that were ever established as being the Federation flagship were the Discoprise, the JJ-prise and the Enterprise D. It’s never been established (unless I missed a line somewhere) that the 1701 under Kirk or the 1701-A, B, C or E were the flagship.

Unless it was some kind of honor because of the NX-01 it doesn’t make sense for the flagship to always be the Enterprise anyway.

BoT is consistently a fan favorite. We just watched the first summer rerun of it last night, and it still falls down for me.

The acting? Great. The script? I can see why Harlan Ellison never talked to Paul Schneider again. :)

There's a line in Strange New Worlds where they refer to Pike's Enterprise as the flagship.

I think I'm also biased from the novels as well, but the over reliance on 'Battlefield Promotion' where the CO (or more) is incapacitated, and some lower officer gets to become the new and untested Captain. They always keep the role afterwards as well. I get the excitement and fiction behind it, but...

KIRK - [Kelvin] Cadet -> Captain of the Enterprise (probably the most egregious example)
PICARD - [TNG] Helmsman -> Captain of the Stargazer
GEORDI - [Novels] Chief of Operations -> Captain of the Challenger (a rare example of not keeping the role)
EZRI - [Novels] 2nd Officer -> Captain of the Aventine

So maybe it's not THAT often, but also feels like a trope in fan fiction.
