Free Illyrians!!! Free the Augments!!!...

It seems perfectly reasonable to me to place limits on any genetic manipulation of people to prevent the effect, whether intentional or not, of creating a class of enhanced "supermen" who may come to feel that their rightful place is in charge. Especially when this has happened before. Bigotry is defines as an "obstinate or unreasonable attachment to a belief, opinion, or faction; in particular, prejudice against a person or people on the basis of their membership of a particular group."

The key question is is this "unreasonable" and clearly the Federation do not think this is so. Remember when Bashir's situation emerged it was his parents who were guilty for taking their child and having him enhanced. He was not sanctioned. Therefore it is clear that while the practice is forbidden. the individuals are not seriously discriminated against. True they aren't allowed to join Starfleet. But real world militaries exclude people on medical grounds all the time. We don't call it bigotry because the Air force won't accept a pilot applicant who is colour blind, or too short to fit the ejector seat.

You know Star Trek promotes bigotry. Yes, it does, against people who augment their genetics to be the best person or species they can be. It is an irrational fear because of one specie , one planet , and one fear from a war fought hundreds of years earlier by this earth specie's. It has brought great harm to other species and peoples through-out the Federation and codified this bigotry into Federation laws.

Illyrains a peaceful people, who use genetic augmentation to adapt themselves to the worlds they colonize. Adapting oneself to living peacefully on another world is much better than terraforming worlds to ones will. It makes more sense for the people and the world they want to live on to use augmentation. Illyrian's and their use of augmentation are now outcast in the Federation even thou they have never harmed another species but face persecution for their beliefs, instead.

Here is the Bigotry: Free Illyrains... Free the Augments... Replace the words genetic augmentation with a race, religious, sex, species and so on in the paragraph below... It is ethnocentric language in Federation law...

https://memory-alpha.fandom.com/wiki/Illyrian

Due to the ban on genetic augmentations in the United Federation of Planets, in the 23rd century, they were considered outcasts in the Federation. Illyrians could not join the Federation or Starfleet, and there was a directive against mixing Human and Illyrian blood. The Federation also banned the use of any Illyrian medical technology. (SNW: "Ghosts of Illyria")

The Federation needs to end this irrational earth fear over genetic augmentation and free the Federation people to be all they can be...

These threads have gotten tiresome. We all know Trek isn’t perfect, many of us have been watching since the 1960’s, 1970’s and 1980’s.

Why, there have been some great well thought-out post on this topic. Yes, Trek is not perfect but its imperfections must be examined and explored not ignored and hidden. Remember, Science Fiction is a reflections of today in tomorrow's worlds so we are an indirectly examining our society...

I want to point out Federation never passed any laws about the Suliban and their propensity to augment their genetic code. They do live in the Beta quadrant in Tandarans space but they did try to disrupt various space powers at one time...

These Suliban formed the Cabal and began to carry out clandestine attacks designed to destabilize various powers in the region, such as the Klingon Empire and the Tandarans. (ENT: "Broken Bow", "Detained")

Have the Suliban or the Tandarians even been mentioned since Enterprise? How would we know what laws have been passed about them?

there's no need to as the tribbels declared them enemies of their empire, sent out the fleet and wiped them out

It's not just Earth that's banned it. It's the Federation.

This strains credulity, in addition to being inhumane on its face.

Maybe Earth isn't the only member world with unpleasant histories regarding this topic...?

Earth is the Federation's homeworld

The Federation doesn't have a "homeworld".

Why, there have been some great well thought-out post on this topic.

It's not the responses, it's the hyperbolic OP's...

Unless they've joined the Federation, presumably none.

You know that's pure semantics.

Again, semantics.
nope, it's not - the terran empire of the mirror universe has a homeworld

... if you keep that up in a thousand years every word will mean everything (interesting talks, they will have) - kree, anyone?

You're totally splitting hairs there. Don't know why. Earth is the home of the Federation government and presumably was where the Federation was formed or ratified in the first place.

Don't be a language cop.

You might need a refund on that phd. Ever heard of synonyms?
you may want to look up the word synonym in a proper dictionary

... would you calll washington the home city of the us?

... there are millions of americans who think getting an election stolen is a synonym to losing an election - think they are right, too?

You're saying that capital is a synonym for home?
sounds like it - like in home punishment (do we have a proper sarcasm emoji?)

Not "home," but "homeworld." Think of it this way, as a colloquialism, in the same way we can call Earth the heart of the Federation even though it's actually a planet. See what I mean? We don't have to be so literal about a word, especially when the actual point of a comment is understood.
