According to Shatner...when he was going off to film for Generations, his daughter had to remind him that he didn't have enough length for his sideburns. APPARENTLY, if you watch closely during early scenes, you'll notice that his sideburns look weird. That's because they chopped a moustache in half diagonally and slapped it on Shatner.

It was the reshoots for the ending, Kirk’s death was rewritten . During the original shoot his sideburns were the correct length. It’s only when he is facing Soran and dies with Picard that he has the fake sideburns.

It’s surprising the things that effect you. I’m glad I’m not the only one who misses the pointy sideburns. If by some miracle it is the hair department actually trying to match the earlier episodes (though if that’s, so where are the beehive hairdos and the rest?), if hip if we ever get a visit from Prime timeline future character, they have the pointed sideburns. Admiral Pike didn’t, but then, like his uniform, his future wasn’t quite “ours.”

Check out Number One's hair. La'Ans too. Both would be quite at home in 1964. Chapel's wouldn't raise any eyebrows either. Ortegas, not so much.
