Spoilers The Flash - Season 8 Discussion Thread

Anyone find it interesting that Caitlin did not seem angry or vengeful in her goodbye video to Team Flash? Caitlin seemed very subdued, sad, low energy to me. I was expecting Caitlin to be angry after what Flash did to her lab.

Maybe she was in a state of denial. I think Anger comes next.

Did she just use fear as a weapon? It was yellow in colour.
Well that was a very disappointing end to the Diggle story. I don’t get why they can’t use the Lanterns on any way. It’s not like the movies are using them. They’re too busy making the 157th Batman, or whatever this Joker nonsense is.

Well, this one was all over the place, covering multiple disconnected plots at once. It was a bit awkward to tie Diggle to Thawne so that they could resolve his story arc in a way that had a connection to this show's ongoing Thawne arc. They even lampshaded how long it's been since the two of them have actually met.

It feels kind of like a fakeout to tease us with the "box" thing for a couple of years and have Diggle decide to reject the call at the end. But the fact is, it does make more sense for Diggle's character that he'd choose his family over cosmic journeys. Maybe it was a mistake to indulge the fans' "Diggle is John Stewart" daydreams in the first place.

Did anyone recognize the voiceover lines when Diggle was perceiving the alternate lives he could've led? My guess is that they're John Stewart dialogue from the comics.

And they were dealing with loose ends from two other Arrowverse series here, since there was also the followup on original-face Thawne from Legends. I'd forgotten all about his redemption arc there. Nice to see that he got a happy ending after all.

I noticed Brandon Routh's name in the opening guest credits, so after Diggle rejected the box, I was halfway expecting Ray Palmer to show up as a Green Lantern and save the Flash from Meena.

I like the rainbow-eyes effect of Cecile's new power. It looks cool. Though it didn't occur to me that the aura colors might be based on the Green Lantern spectrum.

Cecile's ability to make criminals feel the emotions of their victims reminds me of the first short story I ever wrote with serious intent to sell. It was called "To Walk a Mile," and it involved an experimental neurotelemetry implant for rehabilitating criminals by letting them feel others' emotions directly, so they could learn empathy. I never did sell it.

I don’t get why they can’t use the Lanterns on any way. It’s not like the movies are using them.

There is an HBO Max series coming, though.

The Diggle end feels like something 'different' was planned for Diggle and then those plans were rejected and they just came up with this to do away with the dangling thread.

Nothing about how that power ring was presented was ever traditional. I imagine it was too keep it vague. But has one ever appeared in a box to a potential new user? From the wording this whole time I thought they were setting him up to be a all new type of Green Lantern who patrols the Multiverse. There have been many references to more than the traditional Lantern duties. Maybe false memories and my imagination. It really makes the ending of Arrow so unsatisfying. Nothing setup there was really followed up. Neither was the Green Arrow and Black Canaries Pilot. I guess they can go back to John Diggle normal everyday Hero. Which he started as. I think he is turning up in one of the last 2 episodes this season of Superman and Lois.

I am glad I watched the Thawne episodes of Legends this season after abandoning that show. I am really surprised how well that was all tied together. Until Superman and Lois addresses it’s vague place in the Arrowverse, The Flash is where it lives on. With all these guest stars it felt like a crossover. Really to happy to see Brandon Routh even just on a computer screen. He might of shot that out of Vancouver. Surprised they do not do more of this type of thing.

That might have been the best episode of Flash in at least 3 years. Everything about this episode except for cicile worked for me, but more than that there was a sense of mystery I haven't seen from shows like this in a long time. It was great to see the original Thawne back and I appreciated they didn't turn him into a bad guy at the end. I also loved Meena and the music score that went with her scenes was awesome. We even got a John Diggle sighting and finally some conclusion to his story from Arrow. Also there was a bit of Arrow in the episode tonight with the "something else" line.

I've missed this Flash. I'm glad for one night we got it back and the start of the finale looks awesome. While I still think the show should end, this season has been the best season of the series since 5.

Though it didn't occur to me that the aura colors might be based on the Green Lantern spectrum.

The robbers were Red with Rage (though I think orange should have been better for their greed), the hostages were yellow with fear.

Although one of the hostages was blue, which is supposed to be hope. But she passed that onto one of the robbers which made them rethink what they were doing and give up.

Also side note, the weapons the robbers were using were redressed P90s.

he was supposed to be someone different...but they went with something different.

Nice Arrow dialogue tie-in, but dropping the Green Lantern possibility was dumb...unless we find out later that was a test. (SInce the Guardians are essentially immortal, they can play a long game like that).

This whole mess with DCFU and the other TV stuff.... there is no rhyme or reason what versions can be out at the same time, and which need to be put on a shelf because another venue is using it.

I wonder if the Diggle thing was added after Discovery + made thier acquisition...?

What a strange episode.. it was a little like a seasons 1-3 episode of the Flash with twists and high stakes, but a lot of the plots seemed disjointed, out of place, and rushed. I feel like they tried to cram way too much into this episode, some of it unnecessarily. For example, while it was nice to have Brandon Routh back, why cram him into this episode which already had way too much going on?

Anyway, this episode does make me hopeful that they can tie up some of the loose ends of the Arrowverse, like Legends and Batwoman, next season.

For example, while it was nice to have Brandon Routh back, why cram him into this episode which already had way too much going on?

His purpose was to provide exposition on where this Eobard Thawn came from. How else was Team Flash going to learn about what happened to Eobard Thawn on Legends? Having Brandon Routh provided a plausible way of doing that. His character used to be a Legend. He could talk to Nate who could tell him about Eobard and then he could share with Team Flash.

Why would he change faces?

I think the idea was that this was the evil Thawne from Lian Yu taking over the redeemed Thawne's body/existence and killing him in the process.

I'm more concerned about Iris. Candice Patton's role has clearly been reduced this season, and I think negotiations were still up in the air about whether she'd return next season. It would be a shame if the character got killed off because of real-world availability issues. (Although wasn't there an arc in the comics where Iris was believed dead but it turned out she was living in the future? Or that she'd been from the future the whole time, or something?)

There were other things that maybe I would've followed better if I had a better memory for past episodes. When did Cecile and Rosa interact before? Since when has it been possible for speedsters to share their speed with regular people? (Or is it based on the thing where the Flash's powers transferred to Iris for one episode?)

I'm getting really annoyed that Allegra and Cecile still haven't been given proper superhero costumes and code names, when Meena got hers after just two weeks.

The state of things of the comics before Crisis on Infinite Earth was Iris was killed by the Reverse Flash. Much later Barry was engaged to marry a new woman. On the wedding day the Reverse Flash tried to kill her and the Flash killed him in defense. The Flash was but on trial for his murder. During the trial it was revealed that Iris was still alive in the very distant future. Where her birth parents were from. Iris was time traveling into a member of the jury’s body, he was acquitted. When Barry learned of her survival he went to live with her in the distant future. He died shortly after in Crisis.

The idea that Iris gave birth to twins was introduced by Mark Waid. Also that one of them gave birth to Barry’s grandson Impluse. All in the 25th Century I think.

Complicated enough! LOL that’s why anyone expecting a direct adaptation of The Tornado Twins and Impulse as a grandson all from the 25th Century, either never knew the comics or a naive.

Though during this whole “Time Sickness” arc I did wonder if the show would do their own very version of Iris having a future. Though it would have to be very different.

Warning actual spoilers of finale mixed with my own speculation -

I know that both Bart and Nora are back next week. I highly doubt that they are permanently killing off Iris, their mother. No idea what Candice’s status contract is for next season. Likely to be revealed next week. Maybe she goes to live with them in the future?
