Spoilers The Flash - Season 8 Discussion Thread

Okay, what the heck is going on with Candice Patton that they've had to write Iris's entire arc this season around her recurring absence? Is she on maternity leave, or is something else going on? In any case, it makes for a rather forced storyline that I'm not enjoying much, even though this has been a strong season overall. After all, Iris spent most of last season stuck in a mirror dimension, so I'm getting really tired of her being separated from the other characters.

Even the bit at the end where Barry said he could sense that Iris was all right, wherever she was, struck me as a way of letting them move on from the urgency of finding Iris and refocus on other plot elements even though she's still absent, which tells me she probably won't be back soon.

Although it was weird that nobody commented on the fact that Iris still being around with Nora in 2049, and indeed Nora's continued existence, being proof that Iris would return safely eventually. It kind of took away the urgency of the search for Iris when her daughter from the future was talking about her in the present tense.

That line about Wells and Jessie was odd. I thought they were gone.

That was the whole point. Barry was saying he could see past, present, and future all at once, including people who were no longer around in the present, or that he hadn't met yet (like "Max").

This was a great episode, but I'm worried about Caitlin. I don't want to see her turn bad, but what Barry did probably might send her over the edge. I wonder if they are doing a story similar to what the Buffy writers did with Willow in Season 6, and then the finale will be talking her down from really screwing up and we finally get to see her really grieve for Frost. I think that could work, but just making Caitlin the villain 9 years into the show will kinda bother me.

As for the main plot, it was fun, and I really liked the scenes with Singh and Joe. In fact, this was the first Joe episode in a while that I really liked.

In the comics, Pytor Orloff (which seems to be a misspelling of Pyotr) was a Soviet scientist who created a trio of Russian speedsters, then defected with them to save a scientist ally of the Flash and then became his collaborator. So they basically cribbed the name for a completely different character, though not for the first time.

I hope Singh's question about Allegra's code name is a step on the path to finally getting her a proper superhero name and costume.

That shot of Barry with the speed force coursing through his eyes and body when he destroyed Caitlin's lab was something else. You could feel the raw power the Flash has. It makes you wonder what the Flash could do if he ever unleashed his true full power. Yikes.

I share your concern about Caitlin turning bad. What Barry did is the kind of thing that would turn someone bad in a comic book. I really hope they don't turn Caitlin into a villain but it seems like they might go that route. What if Caitlin does find a way to become Killer Frost and we get a villainous Killer Frost? But I like your theory better that Caitlin will be talked down and find a way to grieve for Frost and accept it. That would be better.

It was the first time I thought what if Flash were a villain. I don't think even Godspeed showed that power. Yeah he was fast, but I mean the look of Barry when he did that was kinda horrifying.

It got real dark at the end. :)
Good for Barry. About time he showed some teeth.
Looks like Barry is using Oliver’s prison in the next episode

The smart move would have been giving Caitlyn permission to proceed as long as she allows Team Flash to critique her work (before and during the cloning process) and convince her to change her mind. Destroying the lab is just going to cause delays and push her away from Team Flash. Besides, even if it's questionable that the clone will be Frost reborn, I don't think it is automatically wrong for Caitlyn to bring new life into the world. The more morally precarious part will be trying to convince an essentially new being that it has to continue the relationships, hobbies, and beliefs of its predecessor.

It really reminded me of when The (Tenth) Doctor went all "Timelord Victorious" at the end of Doctor Who's "The Waters of Mars" - the arrogance, the righteousness.

That's a good comparison. It is same arrogance of thinking they know best. It always back fires. There was no reason to do it either. There were other options. He could have just taken the mirror gun and not destroyed all her work. He could have taken Caitlin and put her into a cell at Star Labs. He could have tried to talk to her some more. Or he could have gone to the team and see what they think. Maybe Team Flash could have tried a group intervention with Caitlin. I think destroying all her work like that, will push Caitlin over the edge. She will get absolutely desperate and very resentful. I do think that we will see Caitlin become Killer frost. Caitlin is an expert in biogenetics so she will find a way. She cannot bring Frost back so she will do the next best thing (from her point of view) and turn herself into Killer Frost.

It was definitely presumptuous of Barry to just unilaterally force Caitlin to stop. Even if he disagreed with her decision and was worried about her state of mind, it's still her life and her right to choose, not his.

For a moment in that scene, when Barry was standing there silently after Caitlin's speech, I really thought the writers were going to subvert our expectations and have him turn around and say "You know what? You've convinced me. Let's try bringing Frost back." That would've been a nice twist.

I'm glad I'm not the only one wondering that! I've gotten sick of it.

That was my first thought - that she'll keep going and somehow become KF herself. It would certainly give the actor more to work with and maybe keep it fresh for her.

We caught up on the last 3 episodes last night, and, other than the ending, this seemed like a filler episode. I was kind of bored. Also, calling that barely-there villain Blockbuster did not sit right with me. Plus, Deion going bad? Not digging that idea.

I remember seeing things online suggesting that Candice Patton wanted to move on from The Flash. I suspect when she last renewed her contract she probably had it written in for her doing less episodes, maybe as a way of phasing out her character and eventually leaving the show.

The OG Eobard Thawne next week. That should be fun. It’s been a while since he was seen. I don’t trust this new speedster. No one is that nice and open at the start without hiding something.

It was easy to tell that the situation was designed to force Allegra to stop hiding and reveal her powers. I really hope this is a step toward finally putting her in a supersuit and giving her a code name, since Team Flash has got to repopulate its depleted bench (plus I think she'd look hot as a superhero).

Nice to see Lindy Booth back. Since I watch these episodes online the following morning, I'm going to see Booth twice this morning, since she's in this week's Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. And that's after seeing Rya Kihlstedt twice yesterday morning in Superman and Lois and Obi-Wan Kenobi, though she was in alien prosthetics in the latter.

Given what I read about Meena Dhawan/Fast Track's comics history, I think she could go either way.

I thought the actress looked familiar, and it turns out it's Kausar Mohammed, who was a semi-regular in The CW's 4400 reboot just recently. She was also in a season 2 Black Lightning episode, though I think it was a minor role.

Anyone find it interesting that Caitlin did not seem angry or vengeful in her goodbye video to Team Flash? Caitlin seemed very subdued, sad, low energy to me. I was expecting Caitlin to be angry after what Flash did to her lab.
