Russell T. Davies Returns to Doctor Who as New Showrunner

Is that a subtle clue on the shelves behind him?

(I'd also like to know why he has the French version of 'Asterix and Cleopatra' but that's just me.)

I suspect this may be a wish from BBC for marketing reasons....Bringing back Tennant, one of the most popular Doctors, even if just temporarily, is probably viewed as a worthy enough gamble to do that.

Yeah, I think this is a profile boosting "I'm back !" gimmick, somewhat cynically (but lovingly) re-establishing the show with a big nod to it's heyday.

A big splash prior to heading off into new territory - a glance backwards before turning forward and hitting the accelerator.
Plus Donna, a fan favorite companion played by Catherine Tate
Milage varies.

Her involvement seriously reduces my interest in watching.

The broadcast schedule as confirmed by RTD is this (dates estimated):
November 26th, 2023 - 60th Special
December 3rd - Series 14 starring Ncuti Gatwa
Where did Davies confirm these exact dates? I find that highly suspect since we rarely know the exact premiere dates much more than a month or two in advance.

More importantly.

Someone actually has 100% battery life on their phone. The amount of photos I've seen posted by people who have less than 30% is astonishing.

Each to their own but the highest peak to the series popularity was when she was in it. If you're trying to save the series bringing them both back is a no brainer.
Oh I know she's popular in Who and people even like her own shows.

Personally I've stepped in things I enjoyed more, but I realise this is probably a big positive for the show.

The specific dates in that post are estimates on my part.

What RTD confirmed is that the 60th Special airs in November 2023, followed immediately thereafter by Series 14.

Given other leaks, I wouldn't be surprised at all if Tennant was in three specials. But no one outside the productions knows for sure right now.

Where exactly did he confirm that? He said in an interview in December that the first of the new episodes he’d been working on would air in November 2023 for the anniversary, but nothing about when any others would air or with what kind of specials vs series split.

Both the staggered production schedule listed in the Bad Wolf job announcement from earlier this year and the fact that Gatwa presumably still has to film the fourth series of Sex Education this year fit logically with the idea of three Tennant (and perhaps other Doctors) specials in late 2023 and then a series with Gatwa in early 2024.

Then say that next time. Your post is murky on what was confirmed and what was estimated by you.

And, again, as Brendan followed up on, where did he confirm that? A source is needed. Your claim is not enough on its own.

Personally, I'm beginning to have suspicions that Tennant's return might in a Christmas special airing this year. After all, the leaked photos do show Christmas decorations up in a few of them, and I highly doubt BBC's going to go without Doctor Who this holiday season, given the Christmas/New Year's episodes are typically the higher rated episodes.

Purely baseless speculation on my part, and I am of course prepared to dine on crow should I be proven wrong.

It would make sense though, given your reasoning, to expect this. Also, it'd be nice to have one more DW to bow out of 2022 anyway.

I'm wondering if three specials will run from the anniversary date to Christmas? Pure speculation of course.

I’d love to see something for Christmas 2022, but all the BBC announcements (in which they’re not allowed to lie) have tied the stuff they’re filming now to broadcast in 2023, and RTD (who is allowed to lie, admittedly) said last year that his first episode would air in November 2023.

First episode not first special… and Christmas programming is hazy what with it being the end of the year.

This Christmas special idea has merit. There is enough time to finish it.

“2023” is not actually hazy: if the BBC intended to broadcast what Tennant and Tate are filming now at Christmas 2022, they would have had to say that year when announcing it. It’s at least possible that when Davies says November 2023 he means for the series, not the specials, though I don’t think it’s likely. “Special” is short for “special episode,” after all, and I really doubt he’d written multiple full episodes for the new Doctor months before Gatwa was cast, or that they plan to do all the past Doctor(s) stuff ahead of the actual anniversary.

I was thinking Christmas 2023. Three specials running from the 60th anniversary to that Christmas. Or I suppose you could have one on Nov 23rd, Christmas, and New Years!

I'm only expecting the Centenary Special for the remainder of this year.

Not higher rated this past NY!

I thought someone had debunked the Christmas decorations by suggesting some of those lights are up all year round?
