Captain Archer's place was aboard the Enterprise, not galavanting into the middle of the star on an expedition with the newly discovered alien species.
Archer left his post as Captain and not only put his own life at risk, he also put the lives of the crew of Enterprise at risk. Not to mention that Archers actions put Starfleet security at risk if the new aliens suddenly became hostile and took Archer hostage.
Because of Archers, galavanting, one of the aliens died as a result of the Cogenitor wanting asylym. The newly discovered alien species could have attacked the NX-01 for getting involved which would been Archers fault once again.
If Archer had followed first contact protocol, the Cogenitor could have gone directly to Archer to make the plea for asylum.
Archer failed the Cogenitor, Starfleet, his ship and his crew but more importantly, Archer failed the captains chair because of his greed.
If memory serves, Archer did not have any communication with the NX-01, which, if I remember correctly, a captain is required to maintain comm check ins at regular intervals.
But I could be wrong.
