Lt.Kyle

It's ridiculous to cast people who look at all like previous iterations of the character in the prime universe prequel show?
Semi.

It shouldn't be the first priority, since doing an impression of a past character is not the goal, but to give life to a character at a different stage of life than seen before.

Or hiring the best actor for the job and calling it "close enough," such as with Robin Curtis as Saavik, or James Cromwell as Cochrane.

Kyle was obviously Chief Pitcairn's transporter assistant, so they are getting back to Canon that main TOS broke... ;) I hope they equip new Kyle with disappearing/reappearing glasses.

Sweet Zombie Jesus, how are there nine pages of this bullshit?

He's a transporter chief named Kyle. From an out-universe POV, it's a wink to the audience who recognize the reference, a tip-of-the-hat to TOS. From an in-universe POV, they're different people who both happen to be named Kyle.

Case closed. Jesus.

Not for me, no. Others, probably so.
.

You and a few people here do not care about story consistency. We get that. But for many of us it matters. At this point they should have made trek an anthology show.

You just watch, eventually we will get another reboot of the TOS cast.

Continuity errors occur in EVERY Long running franchise. But current Star Trek makes a sport out of it...

This isn't about story consistency. This is a character being recast. It happens all the time, especially in the stage craft world.

Unless Kyle's ethnicity and place of origin were story relevant then no this is not about story consistency (hint: we don't even know where Kyle is from).

Also, as others have noted, it may not be the same Kyle. It might just be a nod to Kyle from TOS.

What I am discovering that matters is long held beliefs about Star Trek and not necessarily about story consistency.

TOS was made in the 60s, SNW in the 2020s sixty years later. Of course things are going to be "different".
It's just like studying real world history. Having Hollywood around for as long as I have been alive leads to certain expectations of what it was potentially like. Except, and shock of shocks, Hollywood's presentation of history is not always accurate (I know, I know, I was a shocked as you all are).

For me, TOS is like a Hollywood telling of Kirk's missions. The details are not 100% accurate, people were cast for availability and certain dramatic cheats were utilized for drama, i.e. Spock wheeling Pike off to the turbolift to beam down to Talos IV and Kirk swivels in the continuous shot to see Pike and Vina on the surface. Is that a continuity error? Or a dramatic conceit of the format? You be the judge!

I'm hoping so. But not at the cost of SNW and Pike going away one day earlier than absolutely necessitated by real-world events (actor leaving (possible), show cancellation due to viewership issues (unlikely), etc.).

There is no reason that Kirk can't become an occasional recurring character interacting with the Enterprise staff in later seasons. They could even send him and Spock and Uhura off on some side-mission for one or more stories, giving 'em an opportunity to get to know one another.

I notice that in Pike's flash-forward to his injury, as replayed in the first episode of SNW, someone in the vision calls out "Captain Pike!" to him. So, whenever he's promoted to "Fleet Captain," which is a nebulous term, he holds the rank of captain throughout the rest of his service (as reflected in "The Menagerie").

I don't mind all these continuity errors that keep coming up, they don't bother me as long as the stories they tell are good and I like the characters. Starbuck went from a male to a female pretty well I think, so changing stuff on the 2nd go around is fine as long as it's done well.

How does Kyle being played by an Asian actor change the story? How did Saavik being played by a different actor in TSFS change the story? How the Enterprise having 78 decks in TFF change the story?

A TOS recast will happen. It's just a matter of when. And fifty years from now we might see a recast of Strange New Worlds. Time is not standing still. No amount of shrill complaints will change that.

We need a Sam Colt (who will need a revolver phaser, obviously) who looks a lot like Colt but has a pencil thin moustache.

Well I wasnt just specifically talking about Kyle. But it does matter.
Would people like it if they decided to use an Enterprise that had three or four nacelles instead of two? Or of they decided Spock needed to have spots on his ears??? I bet NO ONE answers that seriously or honestly. You know why?? Because they would show themselves as the hypocrites towards changes that they are.

Tff 78 deck thing was awful as was the movie. It was trying to use the formula of 4 but went all out Camp. Just because it was a TOS movie doesnt make it ok.

As for a TOS reboot at this point I do not care. It doesnt matter anymore. Trek stopped having a cohesive universe and making sense a long time ago. If they do a reboot ....it will be an actual REBOOT. No ties to the twisted mess that is the prime and Kelvin verses. But most of us will be dead I'm sure once that time rolls around. So it's a moot point.

There are much better scifi franchises out there that have better writing overall. Star Trek hasnt really had much of that in 17 years. It's just one big mess imo. I'm just glad I have 28 seasons of trek to enjoy that was for the most part for me very enjoyable.

SNW got many things right and others not so right.

But I dont think it is gonna knock the best Trek series off its pedestal...
