Well, here we go! With a firestorm of trailers both mini and regular size, and the premiere just around the corner, let's start up the speculation and discussion on all the new and familiar stuff we'll be seeing with the latest series of the era.

As always, a SPOILER WARNING will be in effect through to the current episode.

    What am I looking for?

    - So much more on the new old new Enterprise! The trailers have shown that Toronto's soundstages are bleeding science fiction sets on a huge scale, and SNW only adds to them. While the bridge set seems to have shrunk, and the corridors are a brightening and rearranging of the existing DSC version (which has already been redressed as the Enterprise), there are TONS of new sets to take in. These include a partially virtual and enormous Engineering set, a two-floor (!) sickbay, an expansive crew lounge, Pike's quarters that may include its own galley, and more. The transporter room is a significant rebuild of the DSC version too, which makes sense as there's little reason to see it in the 32nd century anymore. We may have seen a cargo / shuttlebay as well.

    - The Enterprise exterior has been refreshed somewhat, though some may argue it's not towards the TOS look she should sport in a few years (which I doubt they will ever directly address anytime soon). Those lounge windows have been given their own place on the exterior, just like the Enterprise-D model was eventually replaced with one that had proper Ten Forward windows included.

    - Other starships! Even if this show is supposed to do a bit more episodic exploration, it's still part of a larger fleet and there are lots of assets leftover from the first two seasons of DSC that can be mined. We've seen a couple leftovers at a new Starbase design (more on this soon, I hope!), plus that spiffy new shuttle. And we've seen a crashed Constitution-class ship a few times, which I'm pretty sure is NOT the Enterprise, but we've been surprised before.

    - The SNW communicator already cameoed on Discovery this year; that episode also featured some other anachronistic TOS-esque props, which may show up here as well.

    - The uniforms are almost worth a post on their own, given how many there are. This era of Trek TV seems to be all over the place with frequent uniform changes and having ones concurrently in service. Rationalizing it all will probably take some doing, or else you just have to handwave it away as though you were playing Star Trek Online. But hey, the male skant is here again!

Huh, upon closer inspection the corridors look completely different than the ones on Discovery. No way is it just a repaint with new stickers. I stand corrected.

SNW seems to be bringing the 1701 closer to the Kelvin timeline in terms of updated visuals (at least if you ask me).
There are distinct similarities I can see between the two.

The concentric corridors, at least, are drawing on the movie-era version, with the flat inner wall and K-shaped outer wall.

Indeed, the Kelvin Enterprise corridors are distinctly tube-shaped, where these ones (and Discovery's for that matter) are K- and hex-shaped. The colour scheme however is more like the Apple Store motif of the JJ-films, ironically everywhere except the bridge, which adopts some but not all of the lighter elements and maintaining some blue-gray of its previous appearance and the eventual TOS palette.

Trekcore.com has published close up looks at the SNW phaser, tricorder and communicator:

https://www.facebook.com/Trekcore (will replace with a website link when they have it up).

Now THESE look properly close to the TOS props. Discovery's phaser was definitely in the "halfway between The Cage and TOS" neighborhood, but their original tricorder was more of a TMP feel, and their communicator looked closely to one that would withstand the wrath of Khan's wrath. So did Discovery's Section 31 phaser, btw. Incidentally, the phaser rifles seen in SNW seem to be the same as, or adapted from the same props used on Discovery, and I've always liked how they blend a bit of the TOS version with its spinny flippy central bit with the ENT-era predecessors. Hoping to see more of them, and in better lighting conditions!

(Aside - Did Discovery ever use the smaller hand phaser separately before? I'm guessing no?)

I really liked that design choice because I've long held that the TWOK communicators were much older models, that came before The Cage. That's why they were being used on a cadet ship.

Strangely the SNW phaser angles things a bit too much IMO. the DSC has lines that better echo the TOS version, though to the untrained eye they'd both slide into a "pre-TOS" category pretty easily.

Both the DSC and SNW phasers look more like contemporaries than "pre-TOS". The old "Cage" lasers/phasers would've been obviously "pre-TOS", IMHO.

Interesting to see an Angelou lineage established in Starfleet. :bolian:

    More about them pins:

Anyone know if we have something similar in today's military?

Next, concept art of engineering shows of their warp core..?

And I don't mean the glowey column in the middle - there seems to be something else there in the actual set:

And we may see the inside of the starbase:

Makes it feel all the more in common with the Orbital Office Complex model from TMP, pre-refit into assorted other starsions and starbases.

Looks like a couple of those memorial pins might be a few years ahead of schedule. Or Excalibur and Antares are just having an unlucky streak as names.

Yeah without a registry it's not clear if the pins refer to the known named ships or one of their predecessors.

Of course the explanatory note mentions that ships recovering from huge damage with loss of lives also qualify for memorial pins, so maybe the Antares and Excalibur (and Farragut) have gone through major incidents before the ones they're currently known for.
