Well, here we go! With a firestorm of trailers both mini and regular size, and the premiere just around the corner, let's start up the speculation and discussion on all the new and familiar stuff we'll be seeing with the latest series of the era.
As always, a SPOILER WARNING will be in effect through to the current episode.
What am I looking for?
- So much more on the new old new Enterprise! The trailers have shown that Toronto's soundstages are bleeding science fiction sets on a huge scale, and SNW only adds to them. While the bridge set seems to have shrunk, and the corridors are a brightening and rearranging of the existing DSC version (which has already been redressed as the Enterprise), there are TONS of new sets to take in. These include a partially virtual and enormous Engineering set, a two-floor (!) sickbay, an expansive crew lounge, Pike's quarters that may include its own galley, and more. The transporter room is a significant rebuild of the DSC version too, which makes sense as there's little reason to see it in the 32nd century anymore. We may have seen a cargo / shuttlebay as well.
- The Enterprise exterior has been refreshed somewhat, though some may argue it's not towards the TOS look she should sport in a few years (which I doubt they will ever directly address anytime soon). Those lounge windows have been given their own place on the exterior, just like the Enterprise-D model was eventually replaced with one that had proper Ten Forward windows included.
- Other starships! Even if this show is supposed to do a bit more episodic exploration, it's still part of a larger fleet and there are lots of assets leftover from the first two seasons of DSC that can be mined. We've seen a couple leftovers at a new Starbase design (more on this soon, I hope!), plus that spiffy new shuttle. And we've seen a crashed Constitution-class ship a few times, which I'm pretty sure is NOT the Enterprise, but we've been surprised before.
- The SNW communicator already cameoed on Discovery this year; that episode also featured some other anachronistic TOS-esque props, which may show up here as well.
- The uniforms are almost worth a post on their own, given how many there are. This era of Trek TV seems to be all over the place with frequent uniform changes and having ones concurrently in service. Rationalizing it all will probably take some doing, or else you just have to handwave it away as though you were playing Star Trek Online. But hey, the male skant is here again!
