I need to see more but honestly? I’m finding this a little difficult to get excited about. The promise from the beginning was Picard would NOT be TNG part 2. I like what they did with Will and Deanna in “Nepenthe” but that was a one off. Plus I’ve really enjoyed the new characters. My guess now is very few will be coming back. And that makes me sad. But, I suppose we’ll wait and see.
I agree with you that it would be inappropriate for
Star Trek: Picard to just become
Star Trek: 2 Next 2 Generation, but I think that there are ways to incorporate the TNG crew into PIC without them overwhelming the narrative. And I see no reason whatsoever to assume that the original PIC cast members won't return. Hell, I think it would be pretty damn awesome to see TNG characters paired up with PIC characters -- Worf meeting Seven of Nine, LaForge meeting Soji as his best friend's daughter, Crusher meeting Jurati, Riker meeting Rios, Deanna meeting Raffi.
Also, I hope this means we'll see Kestra again. She was a very cool character and her scenes with Soji were wonderful.
You mean S1, right?
Also, what I wrote is just this: Those who
don't want to see essential elements of S3 could simply avoid it. And if they
do wanna see them, those elements can't be as unwanted as they say.
Generally, we could simply postpone all of this nonsense to a point when we actually know the story, how much each actor is involved, what kinds of scenes they have, if and how much the current cast actually is sidelined, etc.
Wait wait. You're saying we should wait until we have solid information before jumping to conclusions???
And my simple question is: Why should a TNG character show with a TNG character title have as few TNG characters as possible? Why shouldn't it have more?
I think what makes it appropriate to bring the TNG cast back is that
Star Trek: Picard is about the character of Jean-Luc Picard before it's about anything else, and to that end bringing back the most important relationships in his life as the series reaches its conclusion -- and possibly as the character reaches its end -- is an appropriate way to bring emotional resolution to the character. But I also think that
Star Trek: Picard is not
Star Trek: The Next Generation, and needs to retain its distinct identity, both to avoid undermining
Picard as a narrative but also to avoid undermining
The Next Generation as a narrative.
Do we think Spiner will be playing his character from Season One? I can't see him playing Data again.
This is all just speculation, but I could imagine a scenario where Alton has to come back and gets paired up with LaForge and Soji. There's also the potential for thematically appropriate flashback scenes featuring new footage of Spiner as Data. It would be pretty cool to see a couple of re-creations of TNG sets.

But who knows? There are plenty of options for Spiner.
You'd think they'd have learnt their lesson on killling off legendary characters for shocks now...
Killing a character can be a completely valid creative choice. It was appropriate for Iron Man to die at the end of
Avengers: Endgame; it was appropriate for Kirk to die at the end of
Star Trek: Generations; it was appropriate for Han Solo and Luke Skywalker to die at the end of
Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens and
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi; it was appropriate for Sirius Black and Albus Dumbledore to die in
Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix and
Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince; it was appropriate for Shepherd Book and Hoban Wash to die in
Serenity; it was appropriate for Charles Xavier and the title character to die in
Logan; it was appropriate for Spock to die in
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.
If the series finale of
Star Trek: Picard features the final passing of Jean-Luc Picard, that would be thematically appropriate.
It's worth pointing out that Brent Spiner and Isa Briones are part of the "regular" cast for Season 2, but we only saw Brent for the first time properly half way through the season. Isa only appeared briefly in episode 1 and then reappeared last week. So the TNG cast roles for season 3 may not be cameos, but I'd doubt they are in every episode.
Excellent point.
It’s amusing seeing on Twitter certain areas of fandom saying that it’s not a TNG reunion since the “TNG writers” aren’t involved.
Guess the TOS movies weren't TOS reunions then! Nor
Star Trek: Nemesis.
Not sure who they are referring to exactly given how many writers worked on TNG over the years. The ones that were still around for Voyager and Enterprise were accused constantly of being out of ideas in the late 90s/early 2000s.
I mean... they
were out of ideas in the later seasons of VOY and the first two seasons of ENT.
It is pretty wild that RLM made their name by ragging on Generations and First Contact(!) yet now hold up TNG and even Voyager as paragons of television.
I mean, I would say Red Letter Media made their name ragging on the
Star Wars prequel films, but, yeah, I don't have a lot of respect for their newer work.
