Spoilers Season 3 Cast Announcement

Let me get this out of the way. For all its flaws, I love TNG. It was the first live-action Trek series to premiere when I was able to watch it first run. The memories I have will last a lifetime. As I look around my living room, I have the TNG series and movies on Blu-ray, I have a Locutus of Borg figurine, the Hot Wheels Enterprise-D, the TNG comm badge hanging on my wall.

I’m just not interested in constantly reliving the past. I want to move forward. All of time and space is a huge playground, yet we constantly revisit the same characters over and over again.

We’re becoming the Talosians.

I absolutely agree with the wider point. I’m hoping we see something original in the future, the next generation rather than another revival of characters we already know and love. Perhaps the Starfleet Academy show will be that. Discovery has been closer to this since the time jump, but with mixed results.

All the shows so far have traded on nostalgia to some extent - Spock’s sister, holo Janeway, everything in Lower Decks and your actual Jean-Luc Picard. Kirk’s back soon on the show that already brought back Pike, Spock, the Enterprise and nearly everyone else.

And yet… Picard has generally done a good job of resisting the temptation to make TNG 2. If this really is the last time we’ll see these characters and they get a good send-off, I’ll let them off.

Yes, so he's probably playing Altan Soong again.

I imagine they drove a dump truck full of money up to his house and he’s playing Data again. We’ll get to spend two or three episodes watching them bring him back to life.

The TOS movies were reunions of sorts. Like Search for Spock where Kirk had to find Spock's body and take it to Vulcan and he gets the gang back together, steals the Enterprise, and off they go on an adventure. So I could see something similar with Picard S3 where Picard needs to do something important, and gets the TNG gang back together for one last adventure.

I doubt it, it would ruin the character's sacrifice.

I actually teared up a little bit. This made my day. I wonder if they're going to fast track Season 3. I'm assuming they're already finished filming based on the rumors.

What sacrifice? You only need a single molecule to bring him back to life. They’ve already killed him twice.

I suppose they could bring Data back as a human-looking hologram to join the crew on whatever their adventure is. In all honesty I can't remember how Data died died at the end of season 1.

I don't think S3 will be TNG 2.0. It is not going to be the TNG gang on the Enterprise in their old roles, and visiting a planet of the week. My guess is Picard needs to go on sort of quest and naturally he wants his TNG family with him. Or maybe the TNG cast just feature prominently in several episodes. So maybe one episode is Picard going to Riker and Troi for help. Another episode is Picard meeting up with Worf who helps him with part of the mission. But it won't be the entire TNG cast on the Enterprise again together, at least I don't think so.

Also note that the trailer says "joining the cast". So my guess is that the current cast Rios, Raffi etc will still be in S3, they are just going to add the original TNG cast.

This certainly has the sense of an end of an era for this generation of Star Trek in front of and behind the camera.

TNG never really got their 'signing off' moment. Hopefully this is it.

Yeah it was shot back-to-back with season 2. They finished a couple of weeks ago. They've done a pretty good job keeping it under wraps. I always assumed they'd get the band back together for season 3 but there wasn't anything concrete that I heard until today.

I am very excited.

This might sound like an odd observation, but that Twitter picture... I wonder why Alan Kobayashi is credited twice. (He is spelled wrong, too.)
