I don't think Neil was overtly depressed all the time. He was just a humble, regular guy who didn't particularly care for the limelight. And contrary to popular belief, he was NOT a recluse or anything like that.

I guess I juist don't get why everybody keeps thinking that the Soongs are all genetically created beings.

I mean, Noonien had a wife (Juliana) and son (Alton) just like anyone else, why can't the rest of them do the same?
I don't think they are all genetically engineered. Just knowing how things work in this show I don't think they put in that weird exchange about the mother for nothing.
So did Kathryn Janeway and Shannon O'Donnell.
We never say Shannon O'Donnell we just saw the story Janeway was telling. Edit: we get a picture of a very old O'Donnell.

Also, I don't think Kore was genetically "made". When she asks about her mother, Adam looks pained, like he's either a widower or had a painful divorce.
perhaps it pains him to keep lying to her.

Besides, if Adam had created Kore out of a petri dish...she wouldn't have this genetic malady, would she? If Adam had been smart enough to make a daughter from the ground up, surely he'd have done it right.
could be an unintended consequence of messing with her DNA

Why would Adam have needed to genetically create Kore, anyway?

I mean, the guy is smart, reasonably good looking, and by the look of it extremely rich. Surely he'd have women lined up around the block to date him?

Mom died. Built a daughter from her remains.

It's what they did on Ugly Betty.

They harvested sperm from a warm cadaver.

Yes, we did.

A good portion of "11:59" takes place in the past, and Shannon is a main character. We don't just see her in pictures.

The conceit is that what we see is not the past but a story being seen through Janeway's mind's eye, which is why Shannon looks just like Janeway.
