But yeah, her character wasn't used well a lot of the time.

She did a bang-up job counseling Worf after Lieutenant Aster was killed in action.

On various occasions we see people dressing up in costume before going into the holodeck. Why would they bother if the holodeck could just project a costume over their regular outfit?

Some find it more fun/immersive to play dress-up?

Just rewatched "We'll Always Have Paris". Notable moment toward the end: Troi identifies herself to the holodeck computer outside and "requests access", which she is given. Suggesting Picard - who is running the program - told the computer Troi could have access in advance.

Or just didn't set it to private...

Yep! I remember how our heroes were shocked, shocked that Barclay used the Holodeck for something different from having a stroll in the woods or an adventure with Leonardo da Vinci.

I don't know...Riker seemed pretty quick to ask Minuet how real she was.

I believe that we learn in early TNG that the holodeck itself isn't new - but the level of sophistication this newest generation of holodecks offers is.

I like to think that the species from that ridiculous episode in which trip gets pregnant - who had holodecks 200 years before TNG - joined the Federation while the Galaxy class was in development, and Federation holotech took a giant leap forward as a result that the Galaxy class was first to fully integrate.

Except, Garak would regularly do this. Much to Bashir's annoyance.

That's likely not the worst of Garak's legal infractions...

As far as the Holodeck goes, there's no better episode than Picard and Data, vs. Moriarty.

So apart from the aforementioned emersive gameplay thing others posted about...

There's also the fact that these are clothes. Clothes have different fits. Now presumably, a replicator/hologram creator can potentially be the best tailor known to man, depending on how well you program it, making as perfect a fit as possible.

However, even then, most clothes require a breaking in phase to feel comfy, even ones purposely distressed to be less new. So I can imagine that once you found an outfit you like the feel of, you'd want to hang on to it, for future use

It's the same point I make about how some Starfleet uniforms are crisp & new looking & some are worn in & even color faded. There shouldn't be faded ones, if everyone can just replicate a new one daily, but they're always tugging on them. They must be a crappy fit. So when you find one you like, you hold onto it for dear life lol

Obviously the real world explanation for faded uniforms is that they got reused for 7 years

Maybe the squeaky clean, goody two shoes TNG UFP only allows G-rated holodecks on their starships while Quark's holosuites are fully X-rated. That might explain why it's okay to just walk into a G-rated holo while it's illegal to walk uninvited into an X-rated one like in "Our Man Bashir".

In a G-rated holodeck, hanky panky is not allowed. Kissing is okay but that's as far as it goes. If you try to take a holo person's cloths off, they won't come off and if you ask for a naked holo person, the computer will reply, "I an not programmed to respond in that area".

If you try to strip down yourself, the computer wil put replicated clothes on you or put you in a pool with murky water.

If you try to fondle a holo person or even yourself, the computer will administer electrical shocks to make you desist. In the case of certain people where this won't work, other ways and means are utilized to kill the mood such as poison ivy, sonic booms and explosive discharges of dirty water from toilets.

When it comes to prudery, the Decency League has nothing on a UFP G-rated holodeck computer, even navels are not allowed.

Well, Geordi got brainwashed in The Mind's Eye. Picard got assimilated, & tortured by Cardassians. Frankly, I do give her some credit for being the on site therapist for all that horrifying stuff

Not just those two, every single character was basically fine one episode after their traumatic experiences, I'd say Deanna was really great at her job, people don't give her enough credit. So much death, near death experiences, creepy anomalies etc, and barely anyone was ever in a bad mood.

Some of my favorite scenes are confession scenes with Troi. Picard talking about the 4 lights. Geordi, trying to remember what the Romulans did to him, her walking everybody through the holodeck recreation of the abduction in Schisms

Yup. I never give Deanna crap about her ability as a therapist. I only ever crap on her about her hit /miss ability as a telepath... and her ability as a helmsman lol

I think, given the advances in psychology and psychiatry in the last 100 years, it's very hard to imagine what counseling and therapy would look like 300 years from now. I suspect that's why TNG kept this side of Troi's work a little vague.
