We don't know if it was Tholians for sure, though of the aliens they are an OK choice just because we know next to nothing about them.

Never understood complaints around beams vs. bolts.

Thanks, I'd wish for proper dialouge. Imagine a Wesley Crusher on Picard's bridge asking the Captain "Yo brother, do you want some first or second date penetration of that nebula?" and Picard would respond "Nah my dude, use penetration method 'blind date' and procede with caution".

Strange New worlds looks like a TOS reboot with Discovery style visuals,

The Enterprise could fire "phaser bolts" (short, small bursts of phaser fire, not beams) way back in TOS. Examples include "Balance of Terror," when they were laying down patterns à la depth charges against the cloaked Bird of Prey, and the beginning of "Errand of Mercy," when they were jumped by the Klingon ship ("100% dispersal pattern").

The Enterprise firing phaser beams is iconic (it even did in the DIS season 2 finale). So is phasers firing phaser beams. That's just part of the look - like Spock's ears being pointy, the starships flat instead of greebly, or the uniforms colourful.

Lightning bolts is just generic like in any other SF show and gives this fake "action" without substance by having something flashy whizz over the screen. Every other SF show has bolts. Trek has beams.

How is a beam more substance than a bolt?

    WTF?

It's not about better or worse. It's just different.
And here it's supposed to be the other way.

I mean, I guess that's a feeling but Trek has used both so...eh?

So, we're just going to do the plug our ears while shouting "I can't hear you!" thing? I gave examples to the contrary from way back in TOS.

I didn't even get into the stun setting, both from hand phasers and ship turrets. I also didn't get into Berman-era shows, a baton that others can pick up, FWIW.

Do something new = no pre-conceived notions

Make a reboot/prequel/reimagining = running into ALL KINDS of weird preconceptions, no matter how minuscule or ridiculous they might be:guffaw:

Yeah and Batman used a gun before in the comics. So what?

And that clip you posted counts as a "beam" in my book.

"Nah my dude" and "Yo brother". You're trying way too hard.
Pike has a different command style.

If your argument is that you can't justify something in SNW by citing compatibility with TOS, then you've nullified the need to make it compatible with TOS. You've shot your own argument dead. Congratulations?

    I posted no clip.

The "first date, third date" dialogue sounds like something Tom Paris would say-- and I do mean that as a compliment!

They can also stun from orbit too.

Just because something happened before in a large continuity (e.g. Batman using a gun) - that doesn't mean that the OPPOSITE (Batman NOT be using guns) can't be the iconic, canonically accepted version.

    Edit:
My mistake. I was thinking about this one:

And Pike's riffing off her comments. Not sure Janeway would do the same. ;)

Well, I at least agree there.
It means both are canonically acceptable.

    Including in Enterprise!

Seeing Batman casually use a gun still feels weird and contrary to what we know about the character though.

There are 100% canonically all kinds of weapons in Trek that fire bolts (all Klingon weapons, disruptors, MACOs, lots of evil aliens). But - also canonically - Starfleet phasers fire phaser beams.

The other ones are called "pulse rifles". Because they fire pulses.

Now, this detail is probably not worth the 10 pages of discussions we've already had (although - what else are we here for then?:guffaw:).
It's just a minor detail that irks me in what otherwise I think visually hits the nail perfectly on its head.
