News Ms Marvel on Disney+ anticipation thread

Not familiar with the comics version... Not really familiar with Alot of comics versions.. But they changed her powers? What a pisser..
Now she's going to have energy powers like the other ms Marvel and Monica? Boo!
Meh. The movies have changed a lot of things. Thor's hammer had a lot more powers in the comics. He didn't need the Rainbow Bridge to travel to Asgard, his hammer could do it for him. He could travel between dimensions with it and, yes, mjolnir was capable of time travel. In the comics, all of the Eternals could fly. Hulk was capable of so much strength that he could literally crack the planet in two. In another part of the Multiverse, Peter Parker had organic web shooters. Falcon had a telepathic link with an actual falcon named Redwing.

Her looking up to the previous Ms Marvel is a little odd. I don’t think she’s even been on Earth since the mid 90’s.
I would have had her look up to Black Widow or fellow Inhuman, Daisy Johnson

Given the 5 years of unchronicled time during the blip, Captain Marvel could possibly be known to the people of Earth for seven years at this point.

Possible but I got the impression she was in space helping the other races during that time

Mostly, but she just needs a few big appearances on Earth to get some fans. Darcy also seemed to know pretty much exactly what she did in the battle with Thanos, though Thor may have told her.

THOR: There I was, going toe to toe with Thanos. Oh, I think maybe Captain Marvel was there too.

Redwing.
Sorry, but I'm a Falcon fan going back to the days the book was called "Captain America And The Falcon".

You're right, of course. Unforgivable rookie mistake on my part. I will go sit in the corner wearing the cone of shame. :oAnd fix the post. :)

I don't think it's so much for him to be the only stretchy one as it is for him to be the first stretchy one. The FF are coming extremely late to this party, and after the last two cinematic goes (the last one especially) they need to NAIL their MCU debut harder than maybe any of the others before. They're called the First Family of Superheroes for a reason. Plenty of time for Kamala to level up and 'embiggen' once the FF are established.

But again, being 'first' never mattered for anyone else. And it wouldn't change the quality of the product, which is what destroyed the previous F4 films. And he still won't really be first anyway. Groot is still a stretchy tree and Kamala is still showing stretchy fists and probably some other things, just now diluted with a bunch of other random unrelated abilities and all colored blue.

When it's the FFs turn, it will still look cheesy, first or not. It works for Groot because he's just growing his branches. For a human character it just doesn't work on the screen. No matter how good the effects might become, it just looks weird on a human.

I'm actually thankful that they're saving Kamala the embarrassment and giving her the visual edge such a silly looking power needs.

Personally I prefer her powers like this. I've always found stretchy powers to be somewhat off-putting in live action, so making it more of a Green Lantern thing with constructs instead of her actual body is a much more elegant approach.
Plus the fact that she gets her powers from something that might be a family heirloom, or at the very least inherited in some way serves to reinforce the notion that she's a legacy character. While making the powers cosmic energy based give a much more substantive justification for her taking the "Mar-Vell" name than just her being a fan of Carol (even though that's probably 100% why she did it.)

I also wouldn't be surprised if those bands have a similar origin to the Ten Rings, and both probably something to do with the Eternals. So that's at least one phase 4 plot thread that isn't about the main character annihilating all of reality.

As for the show itself, I'm liking what I see see so far, stylistically and tonally. Shades of the MCU Spider-Man movies, shades of Spider-Verse, shades of Scott Pilgrim.

I don't really buy the idea that it can never ever be well done in live action. There are too many things that once upon a time were declared to be fundamentally impossible in live action that, ultimately, were very possible once someone figured out how to do it. But you're 100% right that if it isn't good enough for Kamala, then it won't be good enough for Reed, either, which begs the question what the hell they do with Reed then when the time comes.

Reinforcing that she's a legacy character is one of the aspects that I strongly dislike about it. She doesn't need a stronger bond with Carol. The fact that she's only connected to her because she was a fan of hers before she got her powers is a major plus point of their relationship and really stands out in the vast sea of generic legacy relationships which are *always* built on similar powersets. Why do they have to be the same to work together?

Reed's type of stretching, elongating his body and limbs, works better than Kamala's make a big fist thing IMO.

It's not about being possible. It's about body horror grotesqueness that should just not be done.

Then what is the point of her codename exactly?

And let's be honest, if there's one demographic that doesn't need any more body image problems, it's young teenage girls.

That she looks up to Captain Marvel. That she wants to be her (at first, before learning to be herself of course). It's a *choice* of who she wants to be like, not just getting shoved together with the person who has the same basic powers because that's just how legacy characters are 'supposed' to work.

I love this trailer! The power redesign works for me, but I don't really know much about Kamala.

Does anyone else see a lot of similarities between this show and Naomi?

I had aha! vibes immediately with the sound/comic bubble-theme at the beginning... so I'm definitely not the target demo ;)

I dig the quirkiness and that for once I know pretty much nothing about the character/backstory and so on.
Will happily watch it with an open mind.

Hopefully the comic bubbles and humor all make it into the whole series and not just at the beginning.
Seems like this is more of a feel good story instead of the usual deadly serious/dark for dark sake.
