News Ms Marvel on Disney+ anticipation thread

I'm afraid I'm in for my first real taste of seeing a favorite character adapted in all the wrong ways (imo). We'd already heard about her powers being changed, but I was kind of hoping the extra long delays might have to do with changing that. Clearly not the case, unfortunately, and while the fists look ok they're not exactly great. I really dislike the color and texture of them and I'm especially not wild about the fact that they're apparently just tacking on completely new powers that she never had in the comics (stepping stones?). And I find it even worse to see confirmation that her powers apparently aren't a part of who she is at all, but come from some kind of bracelet (though that part could still be misleading, fingers crossed).

Even leaving all of that behind, this trailer does not make me super hopeful. It very much has a cheap high school sitcom feel to it, as opposed to, say, Spider-man Homecoming which despite being very much a high school comedy still felt like it was given all the resources it needed and like it belonged in the same universe as the rest of the MCU. I'm not convinced of that here, based on this trailer. In particular, the comic book thought bubbles come across as really extra hokey and not really adding much to their scenes. I can sort of see how someone might have the idea as a way to express Kamala's geekiness, but it's not working for me at all so far.

What I will also say, however, is that the actress, while she doesn't blow me away just on this trailer, certainly seems to do a credible rendition of Kamala here. That is by far the most important part, so I do hope she at least will be good enough to make all the pointless changes less glaring and the story as engaging as possible.

I like the trailer and have anxiously been awaiting this series. I only know a little bit about the character so the changed powers don’t bother me - especially since this looks like the bracelets are tied-in to The Eternals and Shang-Chi.

Could be Nega Bands, which is a (Captain) Marvel trademark.
And you think you have it bad, try being a fan of the original or even son of Captain Marvel!

I was definitely thinking Nega-Bands when I saw the trailer. Especially considering those leaked set photos from 'The Marvels'.

Speaking of which, are we expecting an appearance by Brie Larson at the end of the last episode to set that movie up?

It looks like they are conflating something like the Nega Bands with Kamala's bracelet from the comics. Which has no powers, but is just a family heirloom she wears to connect with her family and their history.

It kind of makes sense, however. Energy powers tie her more explicitly to Carol and give a reason why she might be called Ms Marvel in universe aside from Kamala just being a Carol fangirl. It keeps her from stepping on Reed's toes when they finally introduce Mr Fantastic. And it has the nega band homage going for it to boot.

Plus, I'm still unconvinced that you can make a giant CGI hand that wouldn't look incredibly fake on screen. Kamala's powers were always going to be a challenge. This is a potentially dubious but sort of elegant solution, overall.

I know absolutely nothing about the character, her powers, her character or her backstory.

Judging from the trailer, it looks like a fun show that's probably aimed a bit more towards teenagers but that really doesn't matter to me. I'll watch it, because it's Marvel and I follow Marvel stuff. But I have high hopes for this show. I mean, all of the Marvel shows have been pretty damned good so far, in my opinion

I agree the Carol thing is probably why it's happening this way, I just fundamentally disagree it's at all a good idea for her character. I'm also not sure why it matters whether Mr. Fantastic is the only stretchy superhero. Never mattered for punchy, kicky ones (Cap, Panther, Bucky, Widow etc), ultrapowerful cosmic ones (Carol, Thor), supersmart inventors (Tony, Rocket, etc). Plus Groot is already superstretchy, although a tree rather than a human.

I can see that a regular looking hand might be hard to pull off (though they'll have to anyway for Richards) and I would've been fine with changing it a bit for that but this is just too far away from her imo.

It definitely looks like they put effort into the show, and I honestly think those new powers are a lot better then the generic size changing stuff I've seen her do in the few comics I've read with her. I'm glad Ms. Marvel fans have a solid looking show, although I won't be watching because I don't particularly like the character myself, or Marvel style Teen heroes in general (I prefer DC and its sidekick style teen heroes, where things like school and hiding a secret identity from parents are basically never an element to the stories). That said, I'm sure it will be a fine show for the people that are interested in it.

This looks like a super cheap teen superhero comedy that would have been a 2 hour movie on the Disney channel in years past. Just awful!

I don't think it's so much for him to be the only stretchy one as it is for him to be the first stretchy one. The FF are coming extremely late to this party, and after the last two cinematic goes (the last one especially) they need to NAIL their MCU debut harder than maybe any of the others before. They're called the First Family of Superheroes for a reason. Plenty of time for Kamala to level up and 'embiggen' once the FF are established.

I hadn't heard they were changing her powers, so that really surprised me, but it's not the kind of thing that will ruin it for me. Other than that, it looks like a lot of fun.

She's still Embiggening, just Green Lantern-style rather than physically.
