Seasons 1-2 or 3-4?

Definitely 1-2. 3 was okay, but 4 has been very dull dispite a strong start (I loved the butterfly men!)
Personally I'd rank Prequel Discovery over Sequel Discovery. Actually I'll go a step further and rank the seasons separately:
- Disco season 2 was all about the universe making Burnham extremely distraught in every single episode, but overall it was more fun and adventurous than the first season, and I appreciated that. The plot didn't make any damn sense, but I enjoyed it in the moment, and the finale is some of the finest Trek I've ever seen.
- I found season 1's darkness and its disconnect from the rest of Star Trek to be offputting. But it was consistently good in a way that the Berman-era Treks struggled with and it had some real highlights, so I came away from it really glad that Star Trek was back on TV.
- The third season had a bad habit of continually setting up an interesting new premise and then throwing it away an episode later for something a little bit worse. I really liked those first few stories though and it was a huge relief that they didn't blow up the Earth or turn the Federation evil.
- Season 4 has over-committed to its themes of mental health and connecting with others the point where the dialogue has become dry and unnatural, and the characters have become unrelatable. To me anyway. On the other hand, I haven't really felt the pacing issues that other people have complained about.

Seasons 1-2 for me. I still enjoy Discovery, but it lost what made seasons 1 and 2 exciting. The change in showrunners didn’t help the show IMO
Unfair question as both have their ups and downs.

I like both, but I lean towards Discovery shouldn't be a prequel. I also find that with the escalating stakes, DSC works better with nothing else taking place after it. And I like that DSC had a chance to remake the status quo. Starfleet Command's no longer on Earth, Earth's not part of the Federation, etc. I like that DSC doesn't have to share space with TOS anymore and I don't think it should be a TNG/DS9/VOY follow-up either, it should be something else, so that's another reason why I prefer where it is right now.
Not to mention, like I said in another post, I really like all the new characters they've added since jumping to the 32nd Century.

How is it an “unfair question?” You can prefer a particular era while acknowledging that both have their pros and cons - alternatively, you can like them both equally which is also an option.

That has nothing to do with what you originally said, and I acknowledged that in the very first sentence of the first post in the thread.
I know. I still find it an unfair question.
But, I voted both. I find the 32nd century utterly irritating, and am annoyed that Burnham is captain. But there are a lot of good characters in the last two seasons.

Ever since the show moved to the 32nd century, things have been increasingly 'off' for me. All from lack of UFP technological/scientific advancement (which is nowhere near where UFP should be after 930 years INSPITE of the Burn [that really shouldn't have happened in the first place] - and especially taking into account what kind of organisation it is - it really should have had Dyson Swarms or ring across the galaxy by this time and even colonized and set up Dyson Swarms/rings in all nearby dwarf galaxies using automation, and spread to parts of Andromeda as well) to the excessive use of emotions and constant encouragement that made the crew of Discovery look like they are handicapped in some way and not trained SF officers.
I don't mind the crew showing emotions, vulnerability and support, but the execution and timing of it all has been ridiculusly off the mark since S3 began... and it just got worse in S4 if you ask me.
The fact Disco still hadn't made contact with 10-c is also dragging things out unnecessarily. It would have been one thing to have met 10-c and know what they're working with and then spend the remainder of the episodes trying to reach a conclusion.
Doing it all in the remaining 2 episodes (if that even) seems rushed and a bit off putting.
Also, too many 'end of the galaxy/universe' scenarios. Its fine if done once in a while in a limited capacity... but it loses its effect when being overdone.
Maybe season 5 will be better? I won't hold my breath though.

In fact, I’d argue S1 is among the worst of all seasons of Star Trek from either the Roddenberry/Berman or Kurtzman eras. S2 would be right there too but Pike saves it.
I mean, all four seasons are far from perfect but the show should have been a sequel from the start and it suits the show better to finally be there.

Season 1 and 2 for me, mainly because my favorite season is still season 2. The last two seasons have just been not good and Season 4 is incredibly dull. I'm bummed by Season 4 being dull because episodes like Stormy Weather, But to Connect and Choose to Live were great episodes.
Alex Kurtzman said Discovery "brings the look and feel of our Star Trek movies to television" prior to S3. I was a huge fan of those movies and definitely saw it in the show. Jonathan Frakes would even say he put lens flares or crazy camera movements in just to emulate JJ's style.
For whatever reason (I'm curious how the budget of this season compares to prior ones) they decided to slow right down and talk about everything, and hold mini mental heath seminars 3 times an episode. Although not aimed my way, I saw someone on Tumblr say the show "isn't aimed at [established Trek fans]" and that it's made to appeal to LGBTQ+ youth. That's great for them, I just wish they started a new show for that instead of changing mine.

I really wish they would stop changing Discovery to suit the temperature of the room. It is quite odd.
